I know that this issue has been covered in previous posts, but can my gear knob be removed from the auto shift lever without having to replace the lever as well?

Or do i have to hack the old gear knob away from the lever to allow me to fit an aftermarket one!

Or do MB do a newer, smarter version than my existing one!

I do not like the look of the stock gearknob and was hoping to facelift the car with a newer version.

The SLK is a 1999 model.

All suggestions/options/opinions would be happily mulled over!

I think most MB's are the same these days.
If you have a gaiter then lift that up. At the base of the gear knob there is an inverted cone. Turn this 90 degrees (not sure which way) and you should then be able to pull the gear knob off. You may have to be quite forceful.

No gaiter on the auto. As said turn the collar at the base of the gearknob through 90 deg and lift the knob off.

Thanks guys! Easy when you know how! Turned the collar....and hey Presto!

:D

Gear knob successfully replaced with a moden aftermarket one!
