Snapped timing chain - SLK 230K

Im sorry Deborah, i just dont understand the 6.5 hours point you make... just tell them to get real and take the rocker cover off and show you the damage... 30 mins labour at most..

just get everyone to make non interference engines like americans do. good for 100k in between services. big and lazy , not high revving high performing european ones

And low compression, and poor combustion, and high emissions and high fuel consumption

I think the main reason for high compresssion ratios is to promote better, cleaner combustion and to be able to control the burn better. I doubt whether you can get a high compression engine that is non-interference as high CR implies a small piston crown to head clearance

I measured a BMW 535i engine once and worked out the clearance between the closed valves & piston to be 80 thou. The clearance recommended as a rule of thumb is 100 thou so BMW were already 20% under that on a stock engine. Not much scope for head skimming on that one...

I see the attractions of low-technology low-compression engines but times have moved on

i still agree with television & jaymanek ! get cam cover off

How is this going to get Deborah's car running any sooner?

The car could be happily running by now with a nice replacement lump.

in my past i have fixed a few engines with broken cam belt/chains even on interference fit engine , i have found no more damage other than bent valves got to be better than replacement engine,

Hi beacham,

I'm sure you have, I've worked on a few engines myself :)

The difference here is Deborah doesn't possess these skills or tools and so she'd be paying somebody else for the work. That's a big difference when you factor that the majority of the cost would be labour.

I've done countless, my experience shows you are very unlikely to bend a valve without doing some other damage, normally to the follower and these need very careful inspection before re-fitting and my advice would be to check them all even if the valve doesn't appear bent as the tappet often gets damaged first, as i've said before real serious damage useually comes from a dropped valve that was damaged and not replaced.

I only wish I lived Darn Souf. I would love to have a look at this.

television did you forget,OK not another peep out of me
