Snapped timing chain - SLK 230K

As I said , I was surprised to watch this being done at the last ticket .

Isn't there a section on the V5 to allow a change of engine number ?

Yes there is a section and yes it can be checked and yes it should be changed.

In my C class the computer displays the engine number which I assume is coded into the engine ECU, so I would assume that the ECU has to go with the engine in this case - I haven't actually managed to find a number stamped on the block but I assume there is one...?

VW VR6 motors snap their chains at 90k-120k due to a faulty batch of bottom sprockets not being hardened enough. The teeth wear down and this accelerates chain wear until it jumps off the sprocket. This results in new valves, cams and sprockets being required. An expensive engine out job due to poor access.
The basic Mercedes M111 engine on the other hand seems easy to work on judging by the Haynes manual with few or any special tools required and access is excellent.I don't see why the labour costs would be exorbitant at say 10 hours at £35 ph at provincial rates. On the other hand I have been surprised at the low prices on Ebay of low mileage late engines. Recently there was a complete 3 year old 220cdi engine (with fuel injection and ECU) with 37k which made £720.

I foolishly started reading this thread in my new found interest in SLK problems and what do I find? No result!!!

Does anyone know what happened to Deborah's car in the end?
