So, I bought a R107 :)

Well that's good news .:bannana: I would deffo have a quick look at that plenum chamber at some point tho.;)

will do.

I got it at a good price (i reckon anyway) and knew many of its "faults" before i got it, although of course there are bound to be surprises. So I have quite a bit left to spend on it before i start spending what it would probably sell for once done and good. I think everything i do will be adding value. Not that i plan to sell it. i hope to keep it for a good number of years.

i wanted a project; and looks like i definatly have that!!

i must admit i didnt realise that the cost of replacement parts was so high compared to other models. Seems that Merc raised the prices by quite a lot around 2002?

Gonny no dae that.....just, gonny no.

eh!? rememebr i'm not scottish :p

i'm taking the bumper off tommorow night.... wish me luck! the drivers side has surface rust i'm hoping i can fix easily.

i've bought a pot of Por-15

Nah. But you watch Scottish telly?

When you take out the bumper bolts careful cos it will swing upwards at the front corners and scrape the rear wings. The weight is heavily biased towards the back.

Well, the bumper is now off the car.

Those side bolts are TIGHT! but they are now off.

any ideas on how to remove those little screws that hold on the chrome trim/lower panel? they are rusted and rounded. I guess the only option is to drill them out?

Good news:

-centre bumper stiffening looks good and servicable with some protective treatment applied to it
- centre lower valance can also be cleaned up
- looks pretty good under there considering the rust on the bumpers

Bad news:

- both side panels are shot. its worth the £100 to replace them
- both side stiffeners are gone/rusted away. I may have the opportunity to replace with 2nd hand ones though, but yet to see if they are any good on the donor
- rust revealed, similar to Druk's post above where he is welding in new panels - not as severe though thankfully.

Spent most of last night trying to undo old rusted, damaged self-tappers from the chrome trim and the lower valance on the bumper. Almost there now but still some to do.

Some pics of the bumper removal and dismantle:

yeah but its good fun though restoring it and bringing it back to life again.

looks like i'm going to need that welder :D

I think/know that you are more talented that me in this department. I approach DIY with the view that if it starts to look scary I put it back together and send it away to be returned to me in the correct condition:crazy:

not sure about that ;)

me too, but i'm starting to be braver. it will take me ages and looks like there is no way it will be finished by this summer. My original plan was to just bodge stuff but i've decided to do it all properly, but still as cheap as i can and just take my time. I'll be doing everything in stages so i will still be using the car this summer, it just might still have some bodywork left to do.

The pics make it look worse than it really is :)

Nice project, and I admire your dedication.

I would never buy any car with a known rust problem now - had too many of them in the past!

unfortunatly due to my budget it was either a R107 with rust or no R107

As others have said Hats off to you for taking it on.

For me it would frustrate me, you sort one part and another bubbles up...and then you have the wheels / interior and engine to worry about.

My mum had an old classic shape mini with ERA type kit we used for shows, That started to go round the lights, near the opening rear window. We fixed it but it kept comming back....

I will enjoy the updates from the confort of my lounge and again good luck.

Silver

At least you doing it will know its done, I suspect some even at specialist with specialist prices have been 'tarted' up for sale.

Get a Radio and heater in your garage and let the fix begin :)

yeah, my car came from a well known SL specialist 2 years ago. According to the guy i got it from, it was rust-free when he got it (on the body anyway), but it started to bubble 2 months down the line.....

even if the bodywork was tarted up the rust underneath and the bumper rot would of still been in the same stages as it is now.....

plus he had £200 worth of welding done at its last MOT.

He spent £1k on the car since he got it.
