Sound upgrade?

Hi All, I hope that this post is still alive?

I was thinking of upgrading my sound system in my w211 e-class in the way outlined by gIzzE before, but adding a subwoofer on too. I presume that you can do the same type of thing (add an amp) and just connect a subwoofer in to it and it will work?

Also, I have toyed with the idea of upgrading my head unit to an android one, has anyone done this and could advise me? Does this affect the sound quality at all, or change the procedure that you would go through to upgrade the sound system??

Many Thanks,

Tom

This was my tale with upgrading the sounds in my previous E55K.

Hopefully it will be of some use.

I'm not sure I would bother with a sub again if I had my time over - probably would add amplification alone.

Depends what you want to achieve.

Can't help on the headunits though as I kept my standard one.

I have in my W204 the standard COMAND unit (in my case NTG4.7), no amp, connected to upgraded door speakers and a flat ('underseat'-type) subwoofer in the boot. Fitted last year by www.comand.co.uk.

I've had my 2009 CLS320CDI for 370 days now, find it a comfortable and quiet place to be in for the daily commute. Ideal for listening to music. Best source I've found is the ipod, for some reason it doesn't talk to my ip6.

It has the standard COMAND NTG2.5 unit that sounds ok. Gets a little busy sounding.

Not into road shaking sub bass. Prefer warmer sounding presentation, but no flabby bass. I have an eclectic tastes in music.

The amplifiers recommended by GizzE back in 2013 don't seem to be available now.

Would this benefit from better amplification ? What would be a sensible upgrade path ?

Speakers first as MB didn't spare any expense on the original fit, they are rubbish. Put Morels in the front of mine, Panasonics (for their bass extension) in the rear. Also changed the centre dash speaker for a Faital and that improved both vocals and telephone call quality significantly. Didn't bother with a sub, but I put in sound deadening on all doors, door cards, under the rear seat and around the boot which has made the whole car quieter. I am tinnitus sufferer so clarity to me is important and so far I have had a lot of compliments from friends who have good hearing on the clarity of the music in the car.

Thanks Larkone, I already have a Hertz HDP4 four channel amp that was removed from a car I had previously. So I'd like to use that, otherwise it's gathering dust. I'm after a plug and play installation, so the original can be easily put back to (near) stock. I'm unlikely to need a sub, the music I listen to doesn't have much low F content. Did you do the install yourself ?

The head unit is not a bad amp but if you feel the need then of course change to your own amp. They key here is though to change the speakers and improve the sound deadening otherwise you will not hear much improvement by changing the amp - the original fit speakers really are awful. Yes I did my own install, took me a weekend with all of the trim removal but was worth it.
