Purely for my own amusement and also for the benefit of all the members, I think it would be nice to get a general feel of the situation on this forum regarding speed traps and speed trap detection devices. Don't feel obliged to answer, but it would be nice if as many people as possible could answer so we get a more realistic result! This information is obviously kept only on the forum and in order to see this poll people must be logged in etc.

Please read the choices carefully before answering, I did some exams like this a while ago and at first glance all the answers looked the same, but they turned out to be different in subtle ways! ;)

I think I covered all the possible outcomes, people have either been convicted or they haven't; own, don't own but intend to own or don't own and don't intend to own. That's all isn't it?

Just to jinx myself in future, I have no speeding convictions and I don't have any speed trap detection equipment, although I *could* be tempted to buy something for protection if I was convicted for speeding in the near future, right now I don't intend to own such a device, therefore I voted number 6: "I have not been convicted for speeding, I don't intend to own a speed trap detection device". I expect to get a letter in the post sometime this week then!

I get the feeling, from a lot of the posts on this forum, that the majority of people own some kind of speed trap detection device and probably have at least one speeding conviction. I am mainly interested to see whether people with convictions are more likely to own a device. We shall see how it goes! :)

I voted number one, I only got a device after getting caught once and have not sped since!

i voted : I have not been convicted for speeding, I own a speed trap detection device .

cause i have got one , but its saved me .. :)

Havent been caught yet, but dont do enough driving at the mo to justify one, but maybe sooon...

I have had detection devices since I was aware of their existance on a trip to USA, bought my first one there 20 years ago.

I have been caught twice since owning devices, - both times by police cars following me on the motorway - 1 unmarked and 1 marked car which was hiding on a slip road when I passed by on a clear road . no lasers or radar used.

ergo .. no amount of technology will save you from a ticket. I still like the comfort of being warned by my devices if there are active speed traps around whether I am exceeding the limit or not.

I too have been done by an unmarked police car following me which the Road Angel wouldn't have helped.

I've never been caught and hope to keep it that way. Don't know yet whether to opt for a device or not - have managed all these years without one :p

I've been done twice by marked police cars. The white car, flouresant stripe and blue light didn't help, so the Road Angel certainly didn't either!!

Moral of the story? Don't speed when it's dark :D

Results are looking good so far!

Nearly half the people that responded have speeding convictions, and 74% of people own or intend to own a detection device, regardless of convictions, 64% of people with convictions own a detection device. 26% of people don't intend to own a detection device, dispite 33% of those people having speeding convictions! Very interesting! :)

No convictions so far, and dont intend to buy a camera detector etc. I use speedtronic when in London (camera every 15ft or so), and when in town or near schools. When I go for a thrash I choose my time and place very carefully indeed.

I have had previous convictions, now ALL no longer count, so a Clean Licence at the moment.I do not have intentions to buy a devise at the moment.

The reason is that I have always been caught by Policecars with Vascar. Cameras are not so much a threat as I look out for them and respect their need in most cases, so do not speed in those areas.

Like R2D2 I choose my spots to speed, although I cruise at 85mph+ on the Motorways with my eyes peeled. I suppose my time will come again, but that's life.

Having been caught a number of times over the last 9 years I decided to "invest" in a Road Angel. Touch wood, since purchasing it I have not been caught out. I am not the slowest or fastest driver in the world (or this forum come to think of it) but I owe my license to that wonderful box of gizmo's.

Ok I am of my soap box now :p

Caught twice about 15 years ago, once by VASCAR after a drive to Durham, about 00:30Hrs and thought I was in a 40mph limit when it was a 30mph.
Second time was by 'hair-dryer' approaching the Dartford tunnel whilst the bridge was being built. Don't know where the signs were that day but the cops were having a field day.

Is there a device that combines the likes of Road Angel & Garmin Street Pilot?
If such a 2-in-1 device existed I could be tempted.

I was extemely lcuky last weekend.. Came down the M40 in a sprightly manner all the way down from coventry to M25 junction, not one police car... then pass the M25 junction, see a police car by my side.. i was doing way over the limit, thought i had had it, but no lights, i came into second lane, police car came up beside and told me to slow down with some hand signals. Anyway set the limiter to 75... Carried on for a few miles without realising it had turned into a 50.. As the previous police car was out of sight i had also turned the limiter off.. I was listening to my music, oblivious to the fact i was passing all the cars in other lanes quite quickly, then i see a bmw up my ar*e with blue lights flashing... Stopped me and just asked me to be careful and they would let me off this time! She said, i know its easy to lose track of the speed you are doing in these sort of cars, but be more careful.. I was so lucky it was a different police car... Ill be careful on the M40 from now on!

Iv,e been caught Twice by camera,s. The 6 points last 3 years on my licence and was insurance loaded £100. But with my insurance company they last 5 years, Insn,t this just a ploy by insurance company,s to jump on the speeding revenue bandwagon ??

Not really, maybe people that have speeding convictions are more likely to make a claim? The big-brother, master computer they have in insurance companies works these things out I'm sure!

Survey in local paper.

A motorist with three points on their licence was three times more likely to buy a radar detector than a motorist with no points. More than 70% of motorists with six points said that they had bought a radar detector or would seriously consider one.

They recommend the Quintezz XT7000 @ £199 incl delivery in the UK. The supplier "Car Parts Direct of Derby" pays the £60 fine if your caught from a Gatso camera or laser gun.
