Speeding advice

a12 and a14 now have alot average speed camera's zipdip so maybe why you haven't seen a van for a while.

Of course, and this is only an aside.....don't speed! :-)

Went by a police looking car parked on a motorway gantry the other day. We were all probably over, but no one seemed to slow down and I reacted a little too slowly. When I went underneath I noticed vosa written all over it. I have gone quite quickly by a similar car before and have come to the conclusion that they aren't checking your speed! That said, lots and lots of mobile camera vans in the 30 areas where I live. They love to police those. Shame they don't stop any actual more serious crime in the area.
Were the VOSA vans looking for uninsured vehicles, perhaps?

I was cought by a hand held radar gun with the Copper standing in the middle of the outside carrigeway!
He'd obviouslty not heard about Audi Allroad brakes..

58 in a 30 limit. No option to do the SAC, just £60 fine and 3 points.

Interestingly, the code was SP30, which I would have got for 31, so I was not to unhappy with the outcome. Didn't make any difference to my insurance, but it annoyed me because it was my first speeding ticket for 40 years!

58 in a 30 is just 'bleep' reckless.

To then joke about your brakes, state that you were lucky to get away with a lower offense and that you were annoyed is beyond belief.

I'm no saint when it comes to speeding, and generally feel this country is overzealous with speeding and speed limits, especially on motorways. However, with people like you driving around, maybe it's a good thing.

Ouch.......

42 is the SAC limit in a 30 zone. It goes 31/42/53/64/75/86 for 20/30/40/50/60/70 limits.
That's the Limit + 10% + 9mpg guidance for SAC's. Note that some constabularies do not apply that guidance, and opt for prosecution at lower speeds.

However, all this is conjecture at the moment as you need to wait to see if you get a S172 request to identify the driver within 14 days (the day of the ping - if it happened - being day zero).

Not wanting to dampen anyone's fireworks, but unless the operator of a laser detection device was targeting another vehicle or asleep, chances are you were pinged before you saw the van and before you scrubbed off any speed.

We'll put a file in a cake, so it's not all bad :D.

Here in dear old Essex all these mobile speed van drivers are the police on their days off,we used to have a radio station that broadcast where they would be during the day, after all they are safety cameras, but I believe they stopped the radio station,be aware that because of the greed for more money the static 30 mph cameras are being set at 1 mph over.I must admit having been doing a regular run up to Huntingdon twice a week for the last 3 weeks I have yet to see a mobile van on the A12/A14,around here it seems to very quiet at the moment.

If anyone on here, or elsewhere for that matter, gets a ticket for being 1mph over a limit, I will personally pay their fine....assuming of course that the relevant documentation is supplied! :D

Yes indeed, that's just what the current guidelines say ... no guarantees.

And definitely agree on the latter - IIRC it only takes about half a second to capture your speed, from hundreds of metres away.

Exactly what I was thinking. Basically 60 in a 30 is just brain-dead and IMO you are a moron for doing that and you got off lightly.....

Did you see on the news today about a family trying to do something about motoring penalties? Their young son was killed by an Audi driver doing over 60 in a 30 limit, the impact so severe that the victim's car was torn in two. The day before, the Audi driver had posted a picture on social media of himself doing 142mph near Leeds. He was sentenced to six years in prison (so in reality just three) for the killing. Should we really be complaining about speeding fines? Next time, instead of not spotting the camera in time we may not spot the ...

If you have no licence and no insurance then you are not going to be deterred by the prospect of a speeding fine. 3 years is not enough for that level of recklessness. I read that a charge of man slaughter would be more appropriate and tend to agree.

I do not judge people when it comes to speeding - it isn't necessarily dangerous to be speeding, circumstances change. However, the law doesn't change so if you get caught you can't complain.
I would put in a rare good word for the traffic police - I was recently stopped by an unmarked traffic car when I was doing almost 90 on a motorway. The guy gave me a right boll*cking but then told me told be to be more sensible in the future and sent me on my way. I can't pretend that I have never exceeded the limits since but I have certainly been a lot more careful! Good effective policing.

Yes I did see that this morning and also the news reports from the time of the incident, it was hard-hitting stuff.

While I have empathy with your post I disagree that speeding fines will make any difference to the type of character in question.

Thankfully there is only one such lunatic for every thousand(s) of motorists caught bumbling through a camera trap.

i was minding my own business doing 81 this Feb and got done.

I was driving the BMW too.....which explains it really.

M74 north of gretna.......The bit where the mobile camera always is. always...

I should pay more attention.

Give it 3 as they have to get it in the post to you within 14 days, so may be 16-17 before it lands on the doormat.
Nope.

It has to be served on the last known Registered Keeper within 14 days. No ifs, no buts, no maybes. If it arrives on your doormat from day 15 onwards it wasn't validly served. This was established by Gidden v Chief Constable of Humberside in 2009.

No consolation but you would have probably been fine at 80!

you may be lucky it could have been checking road tax they use the same vehicles around here

Bear in mind that, should it land outside of the 14 days, the onus is on the defendant to prove that the requirements weren't complied with.
Absolutely, and without a history of missing mail, mail going to the wrong address, etc. or some other corroboration that is likely to be an uphill struggle.

However, my point was that due to the well understood requirement to serve within 14 days, systems are geared to achieving that deadline and it's unlikely (though not impossible) that the OP will receive anything later than that.
