Speeding up when being passed

That happens all the time to me. People speed up then sit on the rear quarter so you can't pull out...??**@@**
Ahh... I was getting a complex about that happening to me until I knew it happened to you too ;)

I find that it's generally women in horrible cars like a Megane Scenic or some other "kiddy karrier" that are the worst for this. What, exactly, runs through what is laughably described as their brain for them to think it's a good thing to do :dk:

Hence my comment about blipping the throttle - you can put a space between you and pull out at the same time as a gap opens up.

I've been sitting on cruise at 50mph on the M6 between Walsall and Stoke through the average speed cameras a lot lately. Its amazing how many people overtake then slow down, as as I catch up, accelerate away from me, slowing down again when they approach the next camera etc etc. I feel like getting a sign made saying "I'm on cruise at 50mph - follow me!" You'd think a lot more people would be more aware of their licence in an average speed area, especially when they overtake on the left. Surely they must wonder why everyone else is at 50mph too. Makes you wonder whether these people really are the genuinely stupid minority we hear about.

usually if you do about 100mph getting passed isnt much of an issue:ban:

Ha ha.. I do seem to recall that when we met in the Trossachs (as it were) that you had some sort of encounter with a female cop !!!
Setting your cruise to 100 is what I remember you said you had done...
I think your just looking for an excuse to be in hand cuffs with a female officer !!:D

^ just realises sspeed is simonvarious !!!!

D'Oh !

When I'm in the Vito I have a sneaking suspicion that some people simply don't like being overtaken by a van.

Can be a problem when towing too. In heavy-ish traffic, finding a space in front of or behind them that's big enough to fit into can then be a challenge.

It wouldn't be so bad if they then stayed at that higher speed, but 9/10 they slow down again. Until you try to pass again...

There are occasions when I do longer m'way or dual carriageway trips on cruise. Usually set it about the limit - or lower if the traffic is generally moving a bit slower.

Anyhow I used to get annoyed by passing people who then a short distance later would pass me and then later I'd pass them.

Most irritating though is that when passing slightly slower drivers a proportion of them speed up as you pass them. Why?

It seems to happen (I've been experimenting!) when you pass with less than about 5mph speed differential when there isn't a lot of traffic about. Around 50% of the time the car on the inside will speed up a little just as you start to overlap. A % will keep level or actually pull ahead.

If you put a small burst of speed on to get past and pull in and let the car settle back on cruise then the levellers will generally fall back - implying they've dropped their speed back to where it was. A few will sped up and pass you (likely as not to be passed again later).

WHY! ?

I'm sure it has to be down to people's system of reference. If there isn't much traffic about then being passed slowly changes how they subconsciously reference or measure their own speed.

I agree. Everything annoys me on the road these days.

I usually put it down to the rather unfortunate human weakness that some drivers (even if they are going slower than the speed limit) don't like being overtaken. And therefore (maybe even subconsciously) speed up slightly to counteract someone having the cheek to actually want to pass them.
We humans do have some strange characteristics.

It's the use of cruise control or speed limiter which is the issue here.

I always have the speed limiter set on motorways and have noticed that travelling at a set speed highlights the varying speeds of other drivers very effectively.

The fact is that other drivers will drive according to what is around them when I am driving at a constant speed.

I often notice the 'must get ahead of the big Merc' driver who must pass me at all costs but is then happy to adjust to my speed as long as he is in front.

One of my favourites is the driver who passes me like I'm standing still but I then pass him a few miles down the road because he has slowed right down to make/take a phone call.

There's plenty who will slow to about 65 because they have seen one of those traffic officer vehicles.

Yesterday some feller was frantically waving for me to slow as I passed him in roadworks. There was a 50mph limit, I had the limiter set at 53 and he was doing around 40 because a camera was up front.

I've learnt to ignore most people these days, I use the limiter because it means that I still have a driving licence and those without a limiter can't help what they do.

I could have written that. You took the words right out of my mouth.
The only difference is that I set my limiter to 51 and not 53 ! ! ! !

Strangely , I've found that if I'm going to a job with my blue light on the roof , and keep to whaever limit prevails , not many people pass me ! :)

I find the use of the right foot to reduce such folk to distant specks in the rearview mirror works a treat. I can then resume a more modest pace again until I encounter the next irritating vehicle that wants to stick to me!

whats worse; if your towing a caravan and your happily going at 60mph and approach someone going, say 55mph, so you pull out to lane 2 and overtake, they then speed up so you have to pull back behind them, continue and overtake eventually, or go too fast.

Or if you meet someone who won't budge from the middle lane on a motorway.

Last night as I approached one of the many average-speed enforced 50-sections on the M6 I turned off cruise and entered the 50-limit zone at 52mph set by limiter, another car tucked in behind me but LOADS shot past still doing 70-80. As the first of the cameras came into view the outer of the two lanes slowed down to about 45mph but I was still doing 52 on the inside, I wasn't about to brake so kept on going. Made it through the entire roadworks section (3-4 miles) at 52mph in the inside lane passing literally dozens of cars in the outer lane doing about 45mph. Came to the end of the roadworks section, lifted the limiter and pulled back the stalk to resume cruise.

The inside lane is actually the fast lane, and it has been for some time.
