I suspect the answer to this is going to be a no but I'll double check.

I need to get my alloys refurbed and need some replacement wheels to use for the couple of days they are in the shop.

I've been offered some 15in steel rims from a 1999 W202 to use whilst my AMGs are being refurbed. Would the steel rims actually fit?

any help appreciated.

whoooo!!! so they'll clear the calipers and discs as they are narrower than my current wheels?

soooperb news. thanks Jimmy

Well, as far as I know they should fit, your discs will only be 12mm bigger diameter than standard, I don't think you will have a problem.

Dont hold me to it though!!!

smelt a warranty claim in the horizon then. "where there's a blame, there's a claim" :p

You will probably need a set of short wheel bolts for use with the steel wheels. You won't be able to use the same bolts that you use with your alloys.

I agree, i'm sure they will go...Being a '99 202, it will have the 210 part numbered wheels, which clear the bigger discs and callipers used on the C230K...

thanks guys, I've been offered them for £50 with tyres. Will use them then stick them on Ebay I think.

Ricky, are the brakes on the C36 the same as C230K? I thought the C36 brakes were taken off an SL600 (12.6in diameter I think)?

The brakes on most of the C36's are the same as the C230K, C250TD and C280 with 288mm discs. Some models have uprated brakes that are the same as the C43 and the E36 and E430, these are 300mm discs.

C36 brakes much bigger than a C230K.

I would keep the wheels afterwards - always useful. I sold my old 16" sport alloys and have just bought two used 17" AMG replicas so I can swap out my 17" AMG's when I want.

guys, been there, 15" steel rims WILL NOT fit on a C36!

you can try but you wont get em on! :)

unless someones put smaller calipers on yours?

arrghhhhh!! feck

thanks Graham and Alps, you've just rained on my parade!! this means I'm going to have to leave the car with my refurb guys :(

when i had my 17`s done, the wheel and tyre place just stuck on another set of wheels! another set of merc 17`s they had in stock!

Don't know about the C36, but the C43 has 332 mm/300 mm f/r diameter discs, which most certainly will not fit on a 15" wheel.

that was lucky. Non of the places I've phoned would be able to do that.

Alps, did you get the lip on yours polished and laquered or just painted. I'm having trouble finding one local (Manchester) that can produce the original AMG finish.

Have you tried Wicked Wheels? No need for spare wheels, as they come out to you and there's a Manchester location.

Can't vouch for them personally, but when mine are refurbed they will be getting a call :) .

Just checked my EPC...you're right, they aint going!! The rear discs are from a 210 to start with, look to be the same as a E430...they come with 16" steels on them.

The front ones are 202 part numbered, so dosent look to be lifted from any other cars...but are big compared to the 4 cyl, even the C230K

Mick,

on the 17`s I had, they polished the lip, sprayed the wheel and laquered the lot, to original finish!

id try somewhere else mate, they wont look right all sprayed and no polished lip, no bling!

places i go to are all in london im afraid so not much use to you!

Anywhere that can't do the AMG finish lip at all (diamond polished) is probably worth steering clear of, as they obviously aren't a very specialist wheel refurbisher.

Some may inspect your wheels and advise against it, as the process actually involves shaving a little metal off to get the finish - do this enough times it obviously weakens the wheel.

I was so tempted with Wicked Wheels, have seen pictures of good results, but the do it in the back of a van in 7 hours, compared to other places that can't complete the refurb process in less than 3 days worried me. I want the job done once and properly.

If you can wait until tomorrow, I should be able to post a pic of what a freshly refurbished AMG 17" wheel looks like painted all over (I chose no polished lip for easier maintenance and longetivity). This is how they were before they went in as they had previously been painted, so I know I will be happy with the look.

EDIT: Come to think of it, I am only having them refurbed because of some very minor defects, this BEFORE picture should give you a good idea:

thanks for info Alps and Graham.

It's not that the places I've asked can't do the AMG finish, just they won't guarantee it because the lacquer can't be properly bonded to the finish and will need to be redone in a year or two. I think it's going to be polished lip and face facts that I'll have to get it redone or painted and not have to worry about them.

eeeee.....life's choices LOL
