need to strip off the paint on my after market alloys to respray them. any ideas as to what to use.was told (nitromors). but having seen this stuff work i am a bit aprehensive as to damaging the wheels? regards ken

I just had a set of alloys refurbished, got a few quotes and saw some examples of work and was not impressed. I searched the forums and came up with these guys: BJV Engineering They did a top job in three days at an unbelievable price, I mentioned the club but dare not insult him by asking for a discount!

Give them a try, better than messing about yourself.

@ Jimmy - Glad you are pleased with them - pictures please :D

Their prices are definitely good - I guess there is the issue of needing a spare set of wheels in order to get mine done - as mentioned above. They are not that desperate, but might look around for a set of two cheap 16" steel wheels, so I can get the alloys refurbed in two installments and without having to lug 4 wheels around ! They take up a lot of space in the car with tyres on !!

I mentioned before somewhere that I have a set of 15" steels with legal tyres(and bolts) in my garage that I have saved for this type of purpose.

If your within reach of west london and wish to borrow them for a week or so then your most welcome - just send me a PM.

What are you on about? Thats what an estate is for! I took my set and a freinds set of 17" wheels down all with tyres.

There is a handle on each side of the rear seat, if you pull it the seat folds forward! :p

@C240Sport97, yes but for £20 odd quid a wheel you cant expect too much more.

Not a good idea, you might end up with wheels in different shades of grey, erm I mean shiny grey. :D

Best to have them painted at the same time with the same paint.

Cmon you estate drivers, I happily carried 5 spare wheels and tyres in my coupe - Wassup with you?

I only like to use the "load" area for carrying . . . ."loads" :) Too much manual labour involved in folding the seats down :p ;)

oh . . .ok then . . suppose I'm just kidding really ;)

*EDIT* Thanks to Sp!ke's kind offer, I can get all 4 done at once now :bannana:

missed point

well you have gone off on a tangent, my post was to strip the paint from my alloys. not send them off to be refurbished. as i do most d.i.y i dont see the point in spending £200 plus for something i can do myself. kc

Use Nitromors and a wooden scraper, alternatively if you don't want a polished finish, have them sand blasted.

Ken - you are quite right - we sorta went a bit off topic here ! Apologies !!

In any case - don't think you would be looking at £200+, going by the prices quoted on the site mentioned by Jimmy above.

I think the process is described quite well on their site though . . grit blasted, surface prepared, painted, baked etc. . . . . you sure you want to do all that yourself ?

Well, I went and saw Pristine in Milton Keynes yesterday. I now know a heck of a lot more than I did about alloys and what happens to them!

In short, the problem with mine is that the diamond cut edge is corroded. Not a problem, but if they machine them and re-cut them I could have the same problem in 12 momths time, or 18, whenever. Amazingly, top marques such as Mercedes STILL use hammer on weights from the factory on diamond cut alloys, wrecking the lacquer under the weight, and allowing water in. Then, its just a question of time.

So, my only alternative is to do away with the diamond edge to be totally sure. This means a full stove covering, which, in AMG silver is gonna cost me the thick end of £400. More of they need to repair further than they estimated. Oh, and I'll be without the car for at least 3 days.

Don't get me wrong chaps, these guys know their onions and I wish I'd gone to them 3 years ago when I first got the car. Instead I'm thinking of shelling out a bit more for some 17s or 18s. i can't see the point in shelling out £400 on OEM wheels when I could have better looking ones for a few quid more.

I had better explain why I replied to this thread.

I bought a set of 16" Avante Garde alloy wheels with the diamond cut rim, just like Greg's I should think. They were OK but the laquer was blistering and they could do with a refurb. I too contacted Pristine and others and did not see the point in spending that much money.

Somebody here recommended BJV Engineering, I took my wheels to them and they did a really good job for a few quid over £100. I had the whole of the wheel painted as I did not want the lacquer bubbling again.

So I was trying to say that I would recommend spending £100 to get them done properly rather than messing about yourself with paint stripper and wire wool and a spray can.

If you decide to do them yourself, good luck and let us know how it goes.

Trouble is, AMG alloys without the shiny rim don't look good. And they also look like imitations.

Will they store your car for you?

Here's one done by BJV. and at a little over £40 per rim I'm very impressed, for all wheels see my Gallery.

I did mine about a year ago. I was advised that the polished edge would cause a problem after about six months or so and I can just see a small amount of damage when polishing.

Jim any piccies of the fully painted versions?

I am going to have my wheels refurbed, but do BJV also take out any 'flats' on the inside of the rim. Mine are a buggar to balance and the car vibrates at speeds in excess of 100 from time to time.

I am fairly certain that the inside of the rims have got flats on them. I want the wheels sorted so they are as good as new.

Any advice?

Cheers

Ring Andrew at BJV he was very knowledgeable and very helpful. His contact details are on there website.

As part of the service they rebalance the wheels when finished.

I totally agree C240.

Mine are the 16" OEM Avantgarde 5 spokers. As I said, I can't see the point on spending £400 when I could buy another set of 17s.

My car is at the dealer this morning for an oil change so I will have a look a their wares when I go pick it up.

Cheers,

Greg
