Stunning 190 on pistonheads

Its a bit sad in a way that its done so few miles.

odd car to value I guess and would drop quickly if used normally..

It's a gorgeous car. It's a shame it wasn't spec'ed with air con.
I still wouldn't say no, if I had the money!

Darren

I hope it was serviced annually and other fluids changed at the correct intervals dispite the mileage!

Duchatelet wheels = non original spec. For originality, which is what you would buy a car at this price for they should be the mercedes 15 hole alloys IMHO.
Nice car tho, wonder if it had the improved exhaust manifold?

Very nice car, though I wonder why they changed the front number plate to the new style?

Gorgeous! :D I have to admit, I would be sorely tempted to drive it lots, it needs showing off rather than sitting in a garage or a showroom. But then does value really matter? It's the sheer class of the car. Although I guess once out in the open air, the slow corrosion would start :(

I would have to drive it. Sort of car if I won the Lottery (mental note to start playing it!) I would use as a daily (along with a bunch of others).

There are probably enough museum examples in mothballing as we speak - the rest should be driven. After all said and done these are bits of metal and rubber and stuff that should be driven. I realise you would take a massive hit on the price but think of the joy whilst driving it - also think of the pleasure you would give to others when they see it and think "what a car". Come on be honest; how many of use were drooling over the Quattro in Ashes to Ashes:rock:

He is asking a LOT of money for it though !

The problem is these cars are made to be used and not parked up.....the longer you park them up the more hastle you get when you start using them.

There was an article in M-E magazine which went through one bloke's buying process of an old SL and he was insisting on average mileage over low mileage. Then he went through a list of about 50 things that will need to be checked on a very low mileage car because the fluids will separate or evaporate and seals will be perished or dried and things will rust or sieze because they are not moving regularly.

Quite scary really. I wonder if that 190E is another of those "original spare wheel - has not been used!" type cars where the tyre on the spare wheel is dated to expire in 1991 (10 years from manufacture) and if you tried to use it you'd be in serious trouble.

My Father's Porsche 944 had to have the tyres replaced on it recently, not because they were worn but because they were perishing/cracking due to lack of use in the 10 years since they were fitted! Failed the MOT for it!

IIRC tyres are supposed to be replaced every 7 years or so regardless of use/wear (because they start to perish/degrade). It's a major issue with caravans, where there's never any significant wear to the tread.

Well, with most sorts of rubberised components, if they are not used, they either perish or harden.

Sometimes it is far better to buy a vehicle which has done reasonable mileage but has been very well mantained.

Saying that....my spare is the original, brand new and has never been used - 9 years old !!!!!! Seems a shame to part with it !!!!

Very nice, I always liked 190's. Looks stunning though.

North Devon? Not too far from me :D

I know of the seller, he's a member on one of the 190 forums.

It's a nice car - that's for sure, but obviously quite hard to value.

Personally, I'd prefer it with the original 15 hole wheels as Grober has said.

They do fetch very good money in mint condition and low mileage.

As a guide, Charles Ironside has a 52K mile 2.5-16 in Almandine which is up for £10K (pretty clean but not 100% by any means, faulty lap timer gauge etc). And IIRC, a low mileage (26K?) 1992/3 2.5-16 with a full spec - leather, air con, auto, air bag etc sold for around £18K late last year.

I'm very suprised that Ironside would seller non 100% cars, considering his premiums!

That 2nd one you mention....was that the Mercedes Crawley example with auto-transmisson? IIRC that was a pretty late example, too

Hi Darren,

This is the Charles Ironside 2.5-16 that I was referring to:

Link

It's certainly a nice enough looking car, and I'm probably nit-picking, but then again I think you're allowed to at this end of the market ;)

Look in front of the gear shift where the 3 additional gauges are, the middle of the three has a fault (the LCD screen has broken).

That's a £300 repair, and you try and find one secondhand!

The other car was as you remember, the Mercedes-Crawley one, it was a K-plate and I've since seen it being used as a 'daily runner' in London! It seems to be located around Ladbroke Grove area, out in all weathers!!

Nice car tho, wonder if it had the improved exhaust manifold?

Just to clarify - all 2.5-16s have the improved manifold, that was only an issue on early 2.3-16s.

For those of you who might be interested, the original manifold had a weakness where the mounting flange met the stainless pipework - the weld supports were too small which led to a cracked manifold (an £1100+ VAT part! )

Later revised type has bigger supports and doesn't suffer this problem.

I suffered this fault on my 2.3-16 when I had it, luckily Dronsfields flogged me a decent replacement (revised type) for £95 ;)

Fitting is a PITA!!
