So - money no object - what would you build / get made / spec up etc? (none of your yada yada I'll have a ferrarri xyz123...)

(edit) - ok there are BETTER v8 diesels out there - but 6.6 litres turbo and basic enough to run off veg oil has got to have some brownie points?

I'd like the latest model Range Rover (not the Sport, not a Cayenne, not a Volvo XC90 and certainly not an X5...), and I could realistically afford one right now. However I don't want a 12MPG V8 and the diesel version is pathetically underpowered. This means that I wouldn't buy one unless I could have the right engine...

Now the VW Tuareg V10 diesel is interesting from a powerplant point-of-view, but the car itself lacks any design charisma, which is what makes the RR so appealing to me. The VW also suffers in the fuel consumption dept., so it isn't my ideal power unit for the RR, but it comes close. However the V8 diesel in the latest incarnation of the Audi A8 is probably ideal, so either that unit or something similar which has been specifically designed and developed with the RR in mind would be ideal. Say about 340-360BHP and 450-500lb ft torque from 1500 rpm...........if Range Rover offered this option they'd have a winner, as well as a few more punters...

:) Your choice of car but in Right Hand Drive form

If I can't copy then a close second would be the big Mustang

The new V8 CDI

If we are talking practical then I want the very latest S-class in estate format 4Matic with the same engine as above. :D :D

I would buy it in a heart beat.

Strangely enough that's exactly why I like the Toerag. It has none of the "Get out of my way, I'm an arrogant bastard in a hurry!" look of the X5 and is far less bling than the new Land Rovers

I saw a petrol Toerag crossing Neal Street in Covent Garden in the summer. It's a pedestrianised road and the driver just slid up to the junction, silently nosed his way through the pedestrians at less than walking pace and dissappeared with nary a sound. The car looked like quicksilver and was so unaggressive. I really liked it. Just imagine what an X5 driver would have done. Ugh!

Understated is good - I love the Audi A8 for that reason, but it still looks and feels like an expensive, prestigeous car. The VW just lacks the design charisma that a £50k car should offer so it doesn't tempt me, while X5s and Cayennes are more common than Mondeos...almost. I'm not suggesting that it should be brash or offensive, but for the money (certainly in V10 form) it should be special and it just isn't...

The (full fat) Range Rover is certainly driven by footballers and lottery winners these days, but it's pedigree is well established and therefore it rides through fashions and trends without ever buying into them, whereas it's rivals are simply young pretenders and one-trick ponies. The lastest model RR is well-designed, looks expensive and is even built to a standard that suggests it could go the distance, but what really sets it apart is it's presence and charisma. It has this intangible aura of class and good taste (No, not if 22" chrome wheels, blacked-out windows and underbody lighting kits are added... ) and it really feels special to drive and be driven in. If they offered one with a decent V8 (or V6) diesel, I'd certainly buy or lease one.

Oo nice thread.

Practically - I'd love one of the new S Class's with the 400CDI V8 engine that John mentioned. Or a CLS with the same V8 monster.

Un practically, a Chesil speedster with the AMG V8 Supercharged (aka SL55 engine) in it.

Or the same with a 300SL. Sorry.

For those that read autocar, I'd quite like to try that new Audi V12 Diesel for Le Man as well !

My children would probably like a JCB Digger that can fly (from the video to the song) - sounds like a good bet to me as well.

The Lexus 2054 "minority report" electric sportscar. This thing really exists and really works (designed and built in the UK IIRC :) ) but no-one is willing to go into production. I think the main problem is the pricetag - probably half a million pounds :(

Mmmmmmm....

A W124 facelift coupe in deep metallic blue with full AMG kit, suspension , 17" styling II's colour coded to the bodywork with diamond cut lips, powered by a '55' engine. Full interior retrim in biscuit coloured leather including transmission tunnel and dash (a la TVR). Alpine monitors in the headrests, with custom COMAND installation, with a custom AMG quad exhaust .....

That'll do me nicely thanks, and when i have my lottery win, i shall be getting it done.......

Buy a totalled or indeed a fully-working E55 or CLK55 AMG and simply transplant the parts into a W124 chassis/shell. Nice little project for someone, although if you're spending that amount of money might as well put the 7.3 engine from the old SL into it, if Pagani can source them so can you :)

My C43 estate and stick the Brabus 7.3 V12 in

I thought that, but won't it be hugely heavy on the front putting a 7.3 V12 over the front wheels ? it would be nice to have it handling well too , not just in a drag race....

Still , i suppose putting a 5.0 V8 isn't that much different now that i think about it , but can you imagine, money no object what a car you could end up with .....

You could even get custom badging made up ' CE 55 ' and legitimately put 'V8 Kompressor badges' on the wings.....

Yeah, SL73? Total garbage obviously ;)

Who said anything about putting it in the front anyway? Could always put it in the mid-section behind the front passengers.

LOL :D yeah garbage thats right.....

What i mean is that the chassis on the r129 was designed with a V12 in mind at some point wasn't it ? whereas the W124 wasn't hence the E500's being built on a modified SL platform , i think ......

Gotta go in the front, car has to be practical and look as OEM as possible....

Question is would the V12 fit in the engine bay of the W202 :D

Brabus managed to squeeze it into the W210 and W211, but it looks like the passengers have to hold the displaced engine-bay parts, screenwash reserviour in the glovebox etc ;)

I don't think it'd fit in a W202.

Sorry to be awkward H, but facelift coupes aren't called 'CE' ;)

No, thats true, but there's already an 'E55' and '55' badges on the back of cars with no letters look silly ...... ;)

Well, i would call it a 'CE 55' so there :p and when it smokes up the road at 180mph, bystanders would say 'what the hell's that ?' ..... and you could tell them it was a 'CE 55' for me...... ;)

EDIT:- ah, but there are ........ in the middle of the facelift, you could still get the old shape with the new engine, this was called a 220CE and 320CE ......
