Taxi Drivers

Let's see if I understand this. Driver 1 warns Driver 2 by flashing his headlamps that there is a speed trap up ahead. The Police warn Driver 1 not to do it again. I can only assume that the Police would prefer Driver 2 to drive the extra distance between being warned and the speed trap in excess of the speed limit, thereby putting other road users at extra risk.

Is this correct?

Do they want drivers to obey the speed limit or to exceed it?

We were driving alongside a big sports bike on the M3 on Sunday and the rider gave a "1 finger salute" to each and every camera gantry (50 mph SPECS zone) as we went past :)

He can expect a visit from the plod then both drivers below traced and prosecuted, no number plate or putting tape over it just does not work there are so much easier ways to identify the offenders.

Made my day that post.

I'll be getting a visit then, i give a 2 fingered salute or even a more offensive one that I wont mention here that originates from the country that makes our cars when I see a camera. Been doing it for years and never been done....yet.

Out of interest, what's the offence (thinking of the biker)?

Taxi drivers usually know from each other anyway, when one spots a mobile speed trap they often radio control who tell the other drivers. ;)

Just a thought, had christopherwk just come in from the pub to resurrect this thread that was started in December 2003. Maybe in the (nearly) six years that have elapsed, customs and habits of taxi drivers have changed:confused:

I was just quickly looking through the posts (like most newbies) and saw Taxi Drivers, which sounded interesting.

Oh yes, and taxi drivers mostly use PDAs with GPS nowadays - not radios!

Out of interest, what are these easier ways to identify so-called offenders?

Well in the case of the biker they tracked him through the camera's until he reached one of the camera's on the motorway cctv network and got him by his back plate.

In the case of the BMW they zoomed in on the photograph and the chassis number is in the corner of the windscreen an easy check on DVLA database.

Also, how do the police catch up with the people in the photo.

Taking the bike as an example, do they have to search the DVLA database for every single dark red BMW R1150RT in the country, and make enquiries on every single owner to catch the culprit?

I don't doubt your word...but are the cameras that good? If I stand at the front of my car and zoom in I find it very difficult to get a good enough shot to read the VIN.

That must be one hell of a resolution camera -- and in the photo it looks so grainy........without zooming....

Must admit when read he was done for not wearing seatbelt - coffee went everywhere...........:D:D:D

I have actually seen some photo's that came from fixed post Gatso's that were enhanced to show the offenders details, there was another one where the guy hung out of the back door of the car (an old Cavalier or is that Chavalier?) and mooned at the camera The number plates had been removed from the car but the zoomed in enhanced photo clearly showed the registration number very neatly etched into the glass :D Driver and passenger prosecuted.

The grainyness in my post is probably beacuse I just did a screen capture of the image to upload rather than upload a large Mb photo. The original images I have seen are absolutely pin sharp.

Sorry but I also very much doubt that these mass produced small cameras can get anwhere near that level of detail given the confines of the optics.

The police would like us to believe such a thing I'm sure, but suggesting that it could read the registration mark from a window etching of a fast moving car from 20+ meters away is pure fantasy (or more likely- spin) imho.
