Or not as the case may be.

I have a car where the RFL was due on the 1st March 2011, so decided to register it SORN and keep it in the garage and save the months cost.
Now I want to tax this car today as I expect I will want to drive it within the next month, but can't find a way to tax it either online or by phone for the RFL to start tomorrow.

I've tried using the online and automated phone services which only give a start date of 1-03-11.
I rang the DVLA customer services number and got a message they were busy...click..

Anyone know a way I can tax this car either online or by phone to start tomorrow?

Wait until tomorrow and use the online system. The start date should click over tonight.

I don't think you can purchase tax discs post-dated unless a current disc is already in place.

Hence, you'll either have to pay for a disc starting at the beginning of that month (ie 1st March) or wait until tomorrow (when the price unfortunately goes up? :( )

Thanks all.

I was attempting to beat the price increase. The DVLA website does say you can tax a vehicle no more than 2 days before you want he tax to run from, so I thought I would be able to do this.

If I have to pay the additional I might leave it another month as I can leave driving that car as I'm not driving anything at present.

You will get an £80 fine from DVLA for not taxing or declaring it SORN on or before 1 March. They absolutely do not miss this one.

But he's already SORN'd it as I read it? :)

Can't you just do it at the Post Office ?

It's been SORN since late Feb.
My mistake. I didn't realise that. I read it quickly and thought you were trying to backdate the SORN or tax to 1 March.

You cannot tax online unless you ahve a current VED. As it is SORN'd you will have to tax it at a post office or DVLA office.

According to the DVLA website you an get RFL by using the V5 number, but it yielded the same result for start date.
The phone service via Customer services should allow this as well, but I guess they all go home early on Thursday...

When I bought my W126 2-1/2 years ago , it had been on SORN for six months or so .

I insured the car the night before I went to pick it up , collected it from the vendor's local MOT station , with new MOT dated that morning , paid for the car and 'drove it home from the MOT test' (albeit about 90 miles  ) .

When I tried to tax it at the Post Office the next day , I couldn't as I didn't have an official certificate of insurance (only the self printed one which the company allowed me to print , but PO would not accept it ) . Knowing that the disc would go to the previous owner so soon after sale , I checked he was happy to forward it to me ( as a fellow member of the MBOC and known to me , we had trust ) then taxed the car online . I printed out the DVLA confirmation of purchase and put this in the windscreen for the few days until I received the disc , although I was careful not to leave the car in the street before then . I was well aware that I could be done for the relatively minor offence of failure to display , but the car was properly taxed , insured and MOT'd and I carried paperwork to prove all three for those few days .

No..!

Feet are good for short distances...:D

This is not quite correct. I have had my Fabia SORN'd since last year, and received the reminder to either tax it or renew the SORN earlier this month. I'd been meaning to get it taxed anyway but hadn't got round to it, so I took advantage of the reminder to do it online last week.

The website gave me the choice of 01/03/2011 or 01/04/2011 as the start date, so I chose the latter and the disc arrived on Monday this week.

However, the reference number on the reminders is only valid for a limited period (one or two weeks?) after the date on which the tax disc or SORN was due to start. If you leave it any later than that you have to use the V5C.

I only had the new owner section of my V5 when I did it - the reference number on that was all I needed .

Fair enough, but I suspect that you only get the choice of start date if you're using the reminder reference and the month of liability is at least a week off.
