Terrible Handling In Wet

The rain caught me out today - had an "interesting" four wheel drift moment on a roundabout where the surface is different between lanes, and different again on entry and exit. The near-end-of-life dunlops on the front are in my mind to blame, always amazes me how sudden the loss of grip is when the tread is getting toward replacement level.

I have Nexen N3000 on the rear, they have lasted 20k miles and still grip better than the dunlops...

I used to run Dunlop SP9000's and they were useless in the wet. I have changed to Khumo SPT's now and they are so much better and a lot less money too!:thumb:
 
If you have a choice between front or rear replacement it always best to put the better gripping tyres on the rear for overall car stability.:thumb: This means the car will tend to understeer at the limit which is better than having to suddenly apply a "drop of oppo" if the back end breaks away.:eek: The only flaw to this is arrangement is when braking in a straight line in the wet when the majority of braking is done by the front wheels.:doh:
 
I've also had problems with the dunlops as mentioned by a few. Not very good new --> to completely useless in wet after 50% worn.
On goodyear F1-GSD3 now, which I highly recommended on my Seat but not so much on the W203. That might be because they're now made in China instead of Germany..:dk:

Will be heading back to the conti SC3 when these are down.
 
interesting topic, i have the W203 (only had it a month) and noticed a few days ago that i started to notice the rear end 'going' at a relatively low speed, i obviously havent tried to replicate the problem as it has not been safe to try and investigate. the tyres do not seem to be in the best shape (although the tread is ok) which has already caused me concern so i guess its time to change them.

Any advice on what to get or anythign else that should be looked into? I will be changing all 4 tyres and getting aligment, etc... full works.
 
If your camber/castor was out you would feel this on straight roads as your car would try to stray away from a straight line.

I'd put it down to sh1t tyres.
Car does wander a bit from the straight. Figured that might be down to tyre pressures though.

I have Falkens FK somethingorothers on the rear - great and have put new Falken ziex on the mrs' 4 wheels. Can't fault them in the slightest.

I have no experience with the Falkens but I always pick tyres based on there wet performance. The conti SC3 usually fall midpack in most tests except for wet where they are very good. Also very comfortable for a sports tyre. Noisy only after 3mm left (so EOF). Wear is a bit high 30-35Kkm.


I actually have problems twice a year..When really hot in summer 32ºC+
tyres tend no stick as they should (not to mentioned the wear rate) and very wet and cool winters.
