The 2020 CL215 Owners Register

I have the 'sunroof' issue, tilt works fine but not sliding back now, but was working fine previously, so I think from reading up before it needs an oil, so any help on this would be most welcome, where do I apply the oil? Especially if it won't open fully? Just tilt it and pop it where I can see the workings?

This is quite helpful Pete

SNIPPET
ABC Hydraulic Valve Blocks
There are two of these in the hydraulic system, one for the front suspension & the other for the rear.
Mercedes modified them in 2006/7 & they are interchangeable with the pre modified version.
The seals of the attached valves become worn & damaged with usage & age, especially if the system fluid is allowed to become significantly contaminated & dirty

Pre Mod type

1619366634368.png

Post mod type

The front one has proved to be more troublesome than the rear.
There are seal repair kits for the pre modified version.

If repair is undertaken it pays to be methodical & maintain absolute cleanliness during the procedure.

There are a couple of You Tube videos that are useful & explain usage of the repair kits.

There is an excellent comprehensive & detailed article DIY Benz Repair has some quality images regarding all aspects on the valves themselves.

CL215 Windows

These predominantly suffer delamination with age & bubbling around the edges. This is how they were made.

Basically 2 pieces of annealed glass are cut to the proper size/pattern with plasctic Polyvinyl/butyral (PVB) cut a little oversized & sandwiched between the 2 pieces of glass & then through an autoclave (Similar to a huge oven). The autoclave heats up the PVB & bonds with the glass becoming one unit. The pvb is then trimmed off around the edges.
There are problems during manufacture. If the PVB was not cut large enough it can shrink & will not be flush with the glass edge.
There are rollers inside the autoclave that should remove all the air bubbles in the PVB joint but that is not always successful.
Dependant on industry tolerances, affected glass could be released for sale.
Double glazed car windows are not strictly one piece. They are repeatedly moved & not in an ideal environment, consequently with time, delamination can occur.

Mercedes used two manufacturers Pilkington & Saint Gobain (Yorshire based). It is understood that the Saint Gobain windows were superior.

Bad news this morning as my suspension dropped again last week, this was after I had work on it some 6 months ago, this came following a squeak on the front passenger side a few days before, I dropped the car down to sports mode on the ABC and then warning on the dash to the point of 'don't drive'.

It's now in the workshop and they have just come back to say they believe it is a shock absorber that has gone on the front passenger side which has excessive wear - which would explain it and the ABC has all checked out fine.

Just told me that each shock absorber is £1400 + VAT and I really should replace both, ouch!

So has anyone ever sourced new shocks and are there any decent 'after-market' products out there?

Really appreciate some help here as looking at a £4,500 bill to be back on the road!

Thanks

Peter

I don't know the answer but with that cost I'd definitely get a second opinion

Thanks, I have used this garage before, very good and knowledgeable, but pretty sure there is an aftermarket part, as they couldn’t believe the price either, so researching now.

Found on eBay at £799 each so getting somewhere plus another Arnott brand in US but sure to be able to get in UK or closer hopefully at $555.

I believe Arnott are also in Germany where they have a exchange system. They have agents in the UK+ 44 203 3186 124

Thanks you are right @C43AMG, Arnott see a very good option and waiting on a quote and have just provided them with the OEM numbers. Seems like they do indeed offer an exchange of your old shock absorbers/air struts as they remanufacture and actually they look pretty good, dare I say it, better than the original part as have ironed out some issues, but only time will tell.

It's a little confusing with the diagnosis so far, but as I understand it from the garage it is the actual shock absorber/strut that has failed which has had a knock on effect:

'Wear on the strut can cause the ball joint on the bottom arm to have play in it. It is the ball joint on top of the arm where the shock absorber sits, which is worn, hence the requirement for the arm as well. It would appear the wear has started on the top mount and the movement which that has then allowed, has caused the wear on the bottom arm ball joint. So, it would require bottom arm because the ball joint cannot be brought individually. So, although the original fault has started with the top mount the bottom arm is in effect, consequential damage. Whilst the top mount does indeed come with the replacement shock absorber, the bottom arm comes separately. Also need to replace bottom arms as part of the repair. Wheel alignment will also be required when repair has been done. Unable to performed wheel alignment in the vehicles current state due to excessive corrosion on the threads on the track rods and ball joints. Will require new track rods and ball joints in order to complete repair.'

My only question is that, when this happened (and it deteriorated quickly), initially I had the warning on the dash, 'drive carefully' and take to repair shop. As I was at B&Q, jumped out to check the car had which had dropped, so ambled home carefully, but then started to get a 'whirring noise' which actually went in time when I accellerated, so not sure if anyone has experienced that before and be good to have this explained to ensure the shock is the issue here. Then following day, fired her up to see if the suspension would rise back up which didn't happen and that was closely followed with the 'ride to low do not drive' message. So trailered to garage.

Ironically, labour for all of this is coming in at £600 ish + vat and 'Mercedes' parts a staggering £3,500 plus vat. Looking very likely that I can source the parts far cheaper, so will let you know how I get on and will provide the sources I find as could be useful for you all for the future.

Let me know if anyone has any other experiences on failed shocks/struts or indeed further steers or thoughts on the diagnosis as all helpful info as I work out best route forward.

So more research yesterday and pretty sure the whining will be the pulsation damper, but I only had that replaced last time so that should be covered under warranty.

'Arnott' are discontinuing the CL shocks which is a shame as seem a very good product and struggling to source both left and right.

However I have now found two sources for 'remanufactured' which both come with 2 years warranty:

World of Regeneration in Poland - £360 each plus £90 core exchange (so you pay this up front but send your old part back and you get that back)

AND

Airsufat in China - £548.99 for two!

So just seeing if anyone has any experience of remanufactured products from these suppliers, but for the money, seems like they are worth a shot, especially if they come with a 2 year warranty.

Thanks

Peter

And another good find is this company:

They have a lot of parts for our CLs at far cheaper prices than main dealer :)

In my research, the company above that I mentioned 'ABCSpecialist' have an excellent pdf on our ABC systems and I thought well worth including on our Forum, so I have attached below. Have a read when you get chance and decent prices plus they seem to have good stock on various abc parts.

I have now purchases my struts/shocks through Airsufat in China as I have recently had some issues with buying products in Europe with it being held in customs and on two occasions now, sent back to the sender. So China seemed to be the best option and they were also the cheapest, so I will let you know when received if they do the job and are fit for purpose.

Having issues with central locking from fob? PSE Pump problems?

Found a terrific chap called Fawad (engineer) who knows these pumps inside and out. M PSE pump is now all repaired for £240. Popped it back in last night and hey presto! He asked if I needed the soft close on the doors as this puts extra strain on these pumps and if not he can adjust for longer shelf life, so I took that option. Will post details later for Fawad’s contact as if you have PSE pump issues on CL or SL, he is brilliant and a real gent to deal with. I did this all via post 😃.

Also the Pump was very simple for me to remove and refit.
Hello I'm having issues with my pump, would you happen to have Fawad's contact information please ?
