Thanks you are right
@C43AMG, Arnott see a very good option and waiting on a quote and have just provided them with the OEM numbers. Seems like they do indeed offer an exchange of your old shock absorbers/air struts as they remanufacture and actually they look pretty good, dare I say it, better than the original part as have ironed out some issues, but only time will tell.
It's a little confusing with the diagnosis so far, but as I understand it from the garage it is the actual shock absorber/strut that has failed which has had a knock on effect:
'Wear on the strut can cause the ball joint on the bottom arm to have play in it. It is the ball joint on top of the arm where the
shock absorber sits, which is worn, hence the requirement for the arm as well. It would appear the wear has started on the top mount and the movement which that has then allowed, has caused the wear on the bottom arm ball joint. So, it would require bottom arm because the ball joint cannot be brought individually. So, although the original fault has started with the top mount the bottom arm is in effect, consequential damage. Whilst the top mount does indeed come with the replacement
shock absorber, the bottom arm comes separately. Also need to replace bottom arms as part of the repair.
Wheel alignment will also be required when repair has been done. Unable to performed
wheel alignment in the vehicles current state due to excessive corrosion on the threads on the track rods and ball joints. Will require new track rods and ball joints in order to complete repair.'
My only question is that, when this happened (and it deteriorated quickly), initially I had the warning on the dash, 'drive carefully' and take to repair shop. As I was at B&Q, jumped out to check the car had which had dropped, so ambled home carefully, but then started to get a 'whirring noise' which actually went in time when I accellerated, so not sure if anyone has experienced that before and be good to have this explained to ensure the shock is the issue here. Then following day, fired her up to see if the suspension would rise back up which didn't happen and that was closely followed with the 'ride to low do not drive' message. So trailered to garage.
Ironically, labour for all of this is coming in at £600 ish + vat and 'Mercedes' parts a staggering £3,500 plus vat. Looking very likely that I can source the parts far cheaper, so will let you know how I get on and will provide the sources I find as could be useful for you all for the future.
Let me know if anyone has any other experiences on failed shocks/struts or indeed further steers or thoughts on the diagnosis as all helpful info as I work out best route forward.
