The 2020 CL215 Owners Register

In my research, the company above that I mentioned 'ABCSpecialist' have an excellent pdf on our ABC systems and I thought well worth including on our Forum, so I have attached below. Have a read when you get chance and decent prices plus they seem to have good stock on various abc parts.

I have now purchases my struts/shocks through Airsufat in China as I have recently had some issues with buying products in Europe with it being held in customs and on two occasions now, sent back to the sender. So China seemed to be the best option and they were also the cheapest, so I will let you know when received if they do the job and are fit for purpose.
Shocks arrived from China in 5 days, so that is impressive and garage have said they look good, but waiting to have them fitted now to check thoroughly. There was an excise of £80 to pay, so bear that in mind when ordering, but so far, so good.

ABC System & its workings

Pete CL55Amg Has kindly drawn our attention to a particularly detailed & informative Dutch
website https://www.abcspecialist.nl/nle with sections devoted to the 215 ABC system , components.& diagnosis of various types of system failures that can & will occur eventually.
It is written in a simple, easy to understand manner & explains precisely how parts of Of the ABC system actually work.
It adds to the excellent "Guide to the ABC System" produced by Bayhas here (ABC System) & in the Register Snippets library.
It really is most comprehensive & a "Must" for us all

So my CL55 is being worked on and as always a few further issues as the quick release couplings for the ABC hydraulic pipes have corroded and seized solid, the garage have tried all their tricks to remove, but no joy so so need replacing, so a further £314 including vat to add to my final bill. Will update you more once all the work is carried out and share breakdown of costs.

Thanks, I have used this garage before, very good and knowledgeable, but pretty sure there is an aftermarket part, as they couldn’t believe the price either, so researching now.

You seem to have a succession of problems there Pete !
Mercedes prices are astronomical Consequently many owners now buy used parts from
a reliable Breaker, as I do.
Your garage in Cheltenham looks to be competent & well established but are not purely Mercedes.
I would suggest that you consider searching out a Mercedes Independant specialist who will
be cheaper & more knowledgeable on our marque. Many of us have to travel to find a good one.

Thanks Simon, yes the issues are all linked, I just think that although ABC was all fine when I bought the car with no warnings and the car rose and lowered perfectly, I think there were underlying issues which were known by the seller, one being that it was in 'sports mode' which on reading some more recent posts, is something that the ABC system does by default when issues maybe on the way, I didn't know that at the time.

Yes take your point, a purely Mercedes independent sounds a better way to go. If anyone has any good independents please do let me know, I am based on the edge of Gloucestershire/Bristol.

Noted on the parts, have seen one on ebay and be good to hear of others that you know. Out of interest, would you have bought shocks from a breaker?

Thanks

Pete

Yes, I already have but that was because I expected to purchase reconditioned items eventually---which I have now done. There are a small number of good reliable breakers in this country. I can advise further by pm should you wish.
You have my sympathy regarding the ABC hose, I assume that it was one of the flexible ones.
I am also surprised that the experienced mechanics were unable to free it. Although access can be very limited on some.

Please do let me know the reliable breakers as always useful to know. Photos of hoses and they do look rusty but yes, would have been good if they could have freed them. Found two local independents that I have contacted today and will pop down to see them once my CL55 is back as I agree, better for the future to find a trusty one who is happy to fit parts I source, as they were only happy me sourcing shocks.

Thanks again for your insight.

Pete

Why not ask for opinions on the two local Indies in the Mercedes specialists across the UK sub forum here ?
It can be very helpful.
Your car is very low mileage, how many owners? Has it been stored previously ?

Good plan Simon, I will do just that.

I had a conversation with a local Mercedes independent specialist earlier today and caught up with one of their mechanics who seemed to have a good knowledge of SLs including the ABC system and he also mentioned the many electrical issues too on our cars. He did say that they hadn't had much success with 'aftermarket' parts on the work they have carried out to date, so let's hope my new struts are better than what they have sourced! Once I have my CL back, I said I will pay them a visit and have more of a chat and will do the same with the other one I have found, just waiting on response.

My car has had 5 former keepers and from the service and MOT history, was well looked after, but I cannot see that the ABC had ever been worked on previously, so perhaps that was my downfall, I should have gone for one where I could have seen some of the system had been replaced, although as I know now, there are many parts to the ABC system that can fail, so hoping I can work my way through them, but ideally not at this rapid rate! After viewing several other CLs, mine was just so much cleaner inside and out and obviously well looked after.

Not aware that it has been stored previously, but when I checked MOT history it had several years with very low mileage and I also don't do much more than 1,000 per year myself as my weekend car (even less at present)!

Welcome @Justaycarguy, good to have you join us and a very nice black CL you have there with some upgraded wheels I see? Be good to know a little more about your CL500, reg year, miles any niggles to sort? Early days I know, but are you enjoying your new coupe?

Well loads of niggly bits to sort and it's on what I believe a Designo Edition, and it's a 03 facelift with 134k on the clock and I've owned it for nearly a year now, and got a few mods hear and there, it's not black tho 😂😂 as it's purple just for some odd known reason they called the paint black 😂😂😂

Ah yes sorry, I can see it’s dark purple when I zoom in, unusual and looks good. What mods have you added?

A very warm welcome justaycarguy always a pleasure to gain a new member to the Register, especially when they have such a rare & desirable model !
Yours looks to reflect the special paintwork & interior that these models were given.
They were a package that could be ordered & added on production to the normal CL215 range. (Unverified .splitpin)
Your photos (& occupation) indicate that it is well maintained & in excellent condition
How has the paint stood up ? Is there much notable difference from "The norm" inside ?
It really must have an interesting history.... what do you know about it ?
I have included a Designo detail :-
Exclusive “Designo” packages variants: Designo Cashmere, Designo e also available. These packages add custom color metallic paint, custom color Nappa leather interior and exotic wood trims. They are available in three Espresso and Designo Silver. Additional variants can be found on rarer models. There was even an optional granite trim that took the place of wood.

The pebble leather refers to popular leather style (raised bubbles as against the smooth variety) used on a wide range of products.
The Wood trim burred walnut root refers to the wood trim( & steering wheel ) that your car is ostensibly fitted with. We need more info: really.
The two links will give you a little peripheral info:

If you haven`t got original production paperwork for your car I suggest that you return to the "Slammed CL500 " thread in the General Discussion
forum & ask them to provide it for you......they owe you a favour.
We can take it from there !

I still have the original paperwork and everything for the paint work it's almondine black and I'm the 6th owner and bought it from Manchester to Lincolnshire/Cambridgeshire, but it's lived in London and everywhere, and it doesn't have the wood steering wheel nether the wood gearnob as there both leather same colour as the seats
