The Complete M272 Engine Thread

Sorry to be such a Muppet, but this is too important to get wrong.

My 2007 SL350 engine number is A2720106900. Is it in the 'problem' bracket?

You see, I'm just a tad confused because the numbers quoted all start 2729. Mine starts 2720. Is that before or after the problem?

Thanks for your help and advice :-)

Robert

If you post your chassis number then someone can check your engine number. I can do it tomorrow.hth

Datacard says engine number is 272966 30 597794

engines up to #2729..30 468933 -- this when the gear is the problem

engines up to #2729..30 759427 -- this when the adjustment solenoids are the problem

engines up to #2729..30 895140 -- this when the adjustment solenoids leak oil

ie category 2 :)

Thanks for that. I understand now that my engine is the second category - adjustment solenoids are the problem.

I was just confused by the ..30, but I can see that the hidden numbers are irrelevant.

I part-ex'd my 350 on Tuesday for a SL63, so I am relieved to have passed the potential problem on to the MB dealer :o

However, thank you for clarifying the issue, I really appreciate you taking time out to help :thumb:

Cheers,
Robert

Groan....I thought I had just exchanged a 350 with its potential for balancer shaft issues; now this!

Thanks for pointing the problem out though.

I've downloaded the Service Bulletin and will ask Olly at PCS to include a check of the intake camshafts and intake camshaft adjusters when he gives the car a once over.

It's enough it make you go to BMW. Gosh did I just say that?

Cheers!
Robert

Pay no attention to that ! ;)

According to some there are no problems with the m156

That might true however Mercedes Benz is not one of them.
I'm not sure what you regard as a more authorative source of information than a Mercedes service bulletin. :dk: As usual with these problems the problem is often addressed by the fitting of modified components in later engines and may well not be an issue with Pitts Pilot's car. However without knowing the age of the car its difficult to know.

I was kidding Graeme

I've seen threads in the past where if someone suggests that there might be a problem with the m156 , they get jumped on quite heavily by certain members who are convinced that there is not ;)

Hello, I am about to take the plunge and buy a CLK 350 Sport Cabriolet. It's a 57 plate and the engine serial number is: 2729 60 30 734294.

I have asked the dealer to check it for me, however I am hoping someone here can give me a second opinion. I believe I miss the Balance Shaft issue and 'only' have the solenoid issues to worry about? Can someone put my mind at ease please?

Thank you, Jonathan.

2729 60 30 734294 is in the second category. I had my done. MB may contribute if it is full MBSH if not £120 for each of the 4 that needs done...ish.

Thank you R2D2, yes it does have a full MBSH, so if and when the time comes I will be using that fact to leverage what I can from MB!

Do you know whether the failure is more prevalent in larger heavier cars such as the E class or those that are more likely to be used for towing, or is it across the board regardless of how big the car is?

Thanks again.

Possibly more likely to be influenced by whether the engine was routinely subjected to high engine revolutions rather than torque demands. Its revs that tend to go for timing gear. If it falls into the ranges above its not so much if as when. Later modified engines should be fine.

CLK280 need some help.. Please.

I recently bought a CLK280 2007, I am unsure if my one is has the balance shaft issue. My engine number is 27294030584011.

I recently went to my local Mercedes specialist for a diagnostic test, below are the fault codes that showed up

1208 – Constant adjustment of intake camshaft of right cylinder bank in direction ‘retarded’ (P0016)

1200 – Constant adjustment of exhaust camshaft of right cylinder bank in direction ‘retarded’ (P0017)

Please can someone shed some more light to this?

Many thanks

Applicable Models (Not Applicable to Model 164.156, 204 or 216.386): Equipped with M272 Engine Up to
Serial No. 2729..30 468993 or M273 Engine Up to Serial No. 2739..30 088611.
The material for the balance shaft sprocket and the timing chain guide wheel (idler) was modified on
engines past the serial numbers listed above.

Is my serial number not past this?
