The value of 124 estates

My 124 Diesel Estate passed its MoT first time yesterday. A fitting tribute to Ian and the boys at 124 Works. Only did 17,000 in it last year. 3 oil changes and rear disks and pads. Not bad for an old 'un. Value must have shot up now it has a new ticket.

John, that's a co-incidence, my 124 E280T passed its MoT first time yesterday as well!

All this is tending to make mine sound expensive! Having driven it a couple of hundred miles it does seem rather nice. One comment I have is that I can see why they went for a five speed gearbox on later models. It could use another cog once you get to 70mph or so.
Love the sportlne seats.:)
Its currently on 8 hole alloys but I have a set of the correct spec sportline 15 hole wheels which I will refit for the original look.
Everything is working (including aircon) except the self close tailgate.
Will try to get some pics up this weekend.

Do not worry about the price you paid. You are now in a very elite club with one of the top spec cars in that club.

(Stands by for "incoming" from non 124ers)

Looks a lovely car. Great colour scheme. It may have seemed pricey but condition and history are everything if you are going to use it every day. I have just taken ours back down to Italy - 1,000 miles in 1 day with no problems. You will get used to the slightly high revs that the 4-speed cruises at. The 5-speed is said to be much more complicated and problematic. By the way the 8-hole alloys are much easier to keep looking good.

Yes, I agree on both the gearbox and wheels. Maybe I'll hang on the 8 holes in case the others get annoying.

Nice motor!

The M104's also a good engine (although I would say that :-)) and the car looks really nice.

Big up for the 8 hole alloys - simple's good for keeping them clean, no tooth brush required!

Good colour too - the red and white ones quite often look tatty / pink / cream after a while....

That`s a lovely car,I would not say is expensive. The full spec sportlines are very rare

I'm looking to finally take the plunge and buy a w124 estate. This is car I've always admired. I've just missed out on an E300 diesel on ebay which I suspect has been bought by a dealer. I've noticed the diesel seems to sell for much more than the 4 cylinder petrols. Is it really worth it? And is there much difference between a 230TE and an E220? I've seen a very nice 230te, one owner, 170,000 miles for sale, cloth, 5 seats. If I took it up to nearly 200,000 or just over would it be difficult to sell?

All advice will be much appreciated.

The 230TE has a 102 engine (8 valve cylinder head) The 220 has a 111 engine (16 valve and a variable cam)

History is key. Mileage not really a big issue as long as there is a nice big pile of receipts. They will go on for ever if looked after properly. The diesels cost more but unless you do a big mileage the difference in fuel consumption is not really worth it. There is little difference in consumption between 4 and 6 cylinder petrols and the 6s are a much nicer drive. They usually come with a lot more extras fitted.

You are wise to consider resale. My view (as above) is that condition and originality count a good deal more than overall mileage. Buy one somebody else has looked after and fixed all the faults on.

Have 2 of these incredible cars and can vouch for them. I paid for a 93 E320 wagon here in NZ, $NZ7000 (3500 pounds) a few years ago and my spend has only been tyres and oil/filters and plugs. My car tows a horse float (almost 2 ton) most weekends to shows and can say that it far surpasses any diesel ute(pick up) I used to tow with. The grunt it has is a pleasure and I have that incredible smile when a youngster in his Nissan/Subaru gets shown the door very quickly wiht my "old Merc"

I also bought a one owner 88 model 300TE with 300 000km (full service History), and paid only $2000NZ, about 1000 pounds, no problems either aside from oil consumption of a pint per 1000km. This has been an issue from new as the docs state the owner complained from new, of oil use at a pint per 3000km...MB state it was with in specs My daughter uses this to tow her horsefloat, and it also comes up trumps.

I sold my very tidy 300TD for £2500 last week and I'd say £2-3K ought to buy a very good W124. Mine was purchased from Ironside in 2009. Although if I were to buy another I'd source it privately knowing what to look for having owned one for 2 years and paying half or less what specialists ask for. Mine had a good spec: air con, 7 seats, tow bar, alloys, OTG, etc. Having said that there are some good dealer cars around at very reasonable prices: Car Dealership
