Time for PCV valve change and some TLC

Well it's time to change the PCV valve. Found out during a dyno run. It's drawing oil into the air intake manifold. While there I'll replace the injectors which is now overdue. Also new spark plugs, intake manifold gaskets and bolts and possibly upgrade to an aluminium throttle body mounting plate instead of the original Magnesium. No expense spared 🙂

Great to know you are keeping that Beast running and looking in tip top shape. Great stuff 👍

Had a few hours today, so made a start. Dismantled the air intake with ease, thanks to how to youtube videos. The amount of oil pooled on the inside was shocking to see. It took best part of several hours of soaking in degreaser and gentle scrubbing with toothbrush to clean up the muck. Not the pleasant of jobs I must say.

I'm also pleased to report the air intake is in great condition, including the throttle body centre plate. Internally there is nil corrosion, which is pleasing.

Externally there is 1 localised area showing start of corrosion at the underside of the bottom pan as shown in the photo. This area was where a foam trim was partially mated between air intake pan and the engine block to provide some cushioned support. I will treat and epoxy the affect area and repaint and seal it externally. I'm unclear whether the dealership sell intake parts individually, I hear once they go bad it's either a repair or a complete replacement. So epoxy and repaint it is.

Anyways that's the update so far.20220824_175026.jpg20220824_175057.jpg20220824_175112.jpg20220824_180938.jpg20220824_181624.jpg20220824_181742.jpg20220824_182002.jpg20220824_181944.jpg

Hi buddy, your correct, they do rotate as you say. The're known as swirl flaps, i believe its function is to help better the fuel mixture. I've cleaned behind them too. It's looking healthy, just need do the outside casing and also clean the mounting area around the engine bay.

Still waiting for the injectors to arrive and made some enquiries with a few firms in America as to whether they would be able to sell/ship me catch can adapter fittings only. 20220826_165559.jpg20220826_165612.jpg20220826_165622.jpg

Not so sure that's their function.
When in the fully horizontal position, do they cover all the area of the aperture beneath them?
When rotated 90 degrees (assuming they do) do their edges touch the roof of the runners?

They turn only 45° and there is still a fair amount of roof space. According to the diagram the long runners are for lower rpm and the short runners for higher rpm.

I have a question, not sure if anyone would know the answer to this. Weistec install their catch can after the Valve, ie pcv. Could a catch can be installed after the crank case but before the valve?

Received a few goodies including my catch can fittings which is a rare find. The fitting will allow for any aftermarket catch can of choice at a fraction compared to Weistec prices. I have one on its way shortly and looking forward to completing the instal 🙂

PLM (private label manufacturer) are based in San Francisco and they ship worldwide. These fittings are not something one could source elsewhere or individually from Weistec. Hope this info is of some use to anyone wanting to install a catch can and need the correct CNC fittings for the M156 intake (pcv) valve.

Great work. I love your DIY posts because the is a distinct lack of it on the forum, especially AMG related.

Thanks everyone, appreciate the kind comments. I do enjoy tinkering, documenting and posting what could be a useful resource or of an interesting post to anyone.

Just waiting on the final part to arrive, a 5/8" (16mm) petrol & oil resistant hose. Touchwood, will be buttoned up by next weekend. 👍

Mini update, catch was installed last week. There is no space around the engine bay, so found a home just behind the grill making for easy access. Waiting for 90 degree elbow fittings to arrive, need to route the pipe downwards as the existing fitting shoots outwards from the catch can.

Well it's all buttoned and zipped up. Started off with the aim to replace a pcv valve, then got carried away and stripped down the air intake which was full of oil, replaced with new injectors, new spark plugs, new filters, new gaskets and new bolts and installed a catch can.

Very satisfied and feels rewarding. It did take a while to source the parts but well worth it. I worked between my spare time and around commitments. Will monitor the catch can and report back after 500 miles, 1000 miles etc

Here are some finishing photos, happy days 🙂20220914_164138.jpg20220914_165253.jpg20220914_164321.jpg20220914_165037.jpg20220918_120212.jpg20220918_120350.jpg20220918_131548.jpg20220918_133207.jpg20220918_141518.jpg20220918_141602.jpg20220918_141534.jpg20220918_141549.jpg

I think it reads A.Atakul ?
