Time for PCV valve change and some TLC

My engine builders plaque 🙂

I think it reads A.Atakul ?

I think your engine plaque should read (badgx) badgx lol. Amazing work, fair play to you. I'm very jealous of your skills and knowledge that you can achieve under the bonnet of a motorcar. 👏👍🍻 I'll have a virtual beer with you.

I'll drink to that buddy 👍💯🙂

Sorry to bring a post back from the dead, but did you remove the runners/swirl flaps to clean behind? There's a few bolts securing the section to the top cover, but I can't seem to get beyond just removing them.
No need to apologise here buddy, we're here to help. I didn't need to remove the swirl flaps, it's not necessary. I used plenty of brake cleaning fluid, I got 5 or 6 pressurised spray cans from ECP. The baked on crud and carbon deposits melt away with ease but keep plenty of newspapers to catch the messy drips though. While there replace the pcv regardless of current condition. 👍

Good job ! That’s definitely going to run smoother

Sounds great! Unfortunately the added ethanol in our gas and years of infrequent driving have created a taffy like substance in the runners and ports. Some scrubbing and brake cleaner did the trick on the heads, I will see about some long brushes on the manifold. Pcv was original and disintegrated on removal!

I think FCP are kind of equivalent to ECP, although I can see from YouTube video's FCP are far better equipt with Mercedes and AMG parts. I hear they also offer lifetime warranty on most parts and you should be able to get hold of the pcv valve from their website easily 👍

Would you consider the European air box, it's apparently less restrictive?

Yessir, lifetime on parts at their purchase price. You just pay overages if there has been a price increase, shipping, etc. Between the e63 being due for its first brake change, fluids, this job, and an 06 325i, FCP has made a killing off of me this month. Easily the best European parts store you could find! I have considered it, but not too seriously. Maybe down the road. More worthwhile for me to grab a set of headers and a tune first.

A few boring photos 😴, having installed a catch can, it definitely collects by product. Very smelly stuff. Unfortunately, i accidentally reset the trip computer when I cleaned the car, had started to keep a record of mileage and quantity of by product collected. 20230714_135624.jpg20230714_135547.jpg

Great work, are the m159 intake gaskets any different to the m156 in terms of thermal resistance?

I wouldnt have thought so but you never know. I used my own chassis number and that is what was handed over. It felt same as cylinder head gaskets, worth replacing when the intakes are removed.

I'm running BS M159 hydraulic lifters on mine, which has a larger internal oil retention capacity along with 63motorsport camshaft adjuster plates and updated E14 head bolts. Was one of my favourite DIY upgrade, thoroughly enjoyed taking the beast apart and putting it back together.

Whilst there should have replaced the timing chain tensionerers too, that would have been awesome 🙂

Well it's time to change the PCV valve. Found out during a dyno run. It's drawing oil into the air intake manifold. While there I'll replace the injectors which is now overdue. Also new spark plugs, intake manifold gaskets and bolts and possibly upgrade to an aluminium throttle body mounting plate instead of the original Magnesium. No expense spared 🙂

Did this solve the smoke issue ? And when you had this smoke was you consuming engine oil ?

No oil consumption, unless its completely caput. When the pcv valve begins to deteriorate, it does so slowly due to exposure to engine heat, this plastic part is known to fail once in a lifetime, also the construction is not the greatest. The hoses that run from the crank to the intake can disintegrate and can cause rough idle. The part is inexpensive, worth renewing if it's causing issues.

Added some useful videos for information. I didn't believe it's necessary to remove the intake, there is limited space but the valve can be removed in situ with the correct tools.
