To remap, or not to remap, that is the question...

Hi All,

2009 W219 CLS 350 CDI Grand Edition, so Brabus D6 already fitted & 272bhp. Question is, do I go for a remap, and if so, which one and who from?

Been looking at the Celtic Tuning Stage 1 Map (+35bhp & +80lb/ft), but I'm in two minds over whether a mobile service is the way to go, and on some other forums people are saying that CT push the maps a bit too far for the fuelling. What I don't want to do is break the car!

I'm in Kent, so somewhere local(ish) would be good!

Any advice, or recommendations would be most welcome...

Cheers,

Adam.

I personally would not go for Celtic or Viezu.

Any particular reason?

I which way do you find the 350cdi lacking?

In terms of peformance/economy I'd say it was a pretty smart combination.

You have the brabus box. It's good, just leave it.

Why would you remove the tried and tested Brabus tuning box that gives you circa 40bhp for a map with less bhp?

Do you mean remap on top of the Brabus?

I got a friend has done that!

Stick with the Brabus power unit and enjoy the car.

Yes, on top of the D6 :thumb:

MSL quoting around £450 for a custom map & before & after dyno runs.

CT quote £325 for a stock map & no dyno.

I may well be taking a trip to Brum! :thumb:

TBH, I'm more interested in smoothing out the responsiveness, and getting smoother gearchanges than outright POWERRRRR...

What's the point in that? it's not like you will get more power from it... It's like running two ECU's simultaneously. Try stage 2 or bigger/hybrid turbo if you're trying to squeeze out more power.

Then IMO your better off removing the brabus module only if you get a customised remap live on a rolling road tuned specificaly to your vehicle if you want smooth gear changes and maximum torque power delivery!

I don't even know if a remap AND the brabus box together would be compatible. Remapping and tuning boxes deliver similar results in a different way. I don't think it would end very well. The box would be telling the ECU to do one thing and the remap to do another.

Bigger turbo and maybe a new exhaust, possibly dpf delete would give gains more reliably i think.

Hi All,

It's interesting, reading all the responses, the variety of opinions on this. I'm currently thinking that I may leave it alone (for now, at least) and do some more investigation.

Pros: Better acceleration, Smoother delivery, Smoother gearchanges, Possible fuel economy benefits?

Cons: Will it work with D6?, Possible reliability issues?, Higher insurance cost

It certainly would make sense and be more logical to either move straight to stage 2 or alternatively remove the Brabus module and then custom tune the ECU live on a rolling road specifically tailored to the vehicle as the OP has stated he mainly wants smooth running/gear changes. I am getting the impression from the OP that the Brabus module is not providing smooth gear changes and could turn in to another Remap V Tuning box/power module thread. Brabus are damn good at what they do and use their own in house developed software on their power modules (just like MKB do with their remaps) but the smoothness and power delivery/gear changes will never be as smooth as a live customised remap tuned specifically to the vehicle hence the OP is looking at an alternative in my view to correct this.

Whilst on the subject of in house developed tuning software from what I have been advised (I stand to be corrected if I am wrong) but apparently Carlsson (another big name/MB tuner) do not either use their own in house developed software for their tuning and the software has been provided to them by a third party just like it is to many other tuners hence the majority of tuners provide similar power increases figures just over the standard stock RPM range.

IMO I also agree that having a power module in addition to a ECU remap would be problematic but is down to the OP if he wants to take the risk.

My 320CDI was done at msl and it was a map from big fish tuning and I am very happy. Iirc it changes the torque parameters in the gearbox also so no need to change down as before with shed loads more torque on tap ☺
