transmission question

Yes it is. The gears will shift-up at a higher engine rev when the car is cold. This is done in order to reduce pullution. When the engine is cold, the catalytic converter is also cold and therefore ineffective. When the engine revs higher it warms-up more quickly. So warming-up the cat quickly helps reduce pollution.
Thank you

Thank you

it also holds the gears to get the engine and gearbox oils up to temp quicker , hotter = leaner , more mpg and less pollution.

defo try it in 2nd and dont hold the footbrake after you engage drive , just be ready to move off and the groan should dissappear

Is the sound the car moving against the parking brake? Try foot brake on, parking brake off, then into drive.

I only just bought it 5 weeks ago it's 5 gear yes. I asked e dealer he said it's all done before he put it up for sale. It looks ok colorwise.I record t today

If you bought it off an MB dealer, then the ATF and filter change will be recorded in the Digital Service Book.

If not bought from an MB dealer, then try and make sure that the ATF looks new - it should still be red and clear if the ATF change was only recently done.

Yes it is red and clear. I also asked him to change the gear oil which he said he did.

The ATF is the 'gear oil'.... do you mean the engine oil? Or diff oil?

If the car moves against the parking brake it grinds.

try pulling away with handbrake off , and lift your foot off the brake pedal as soon as you engage drive, see if noise remains.

I’ve not heard a crunch since driving school in an old fiesta.

You’re either joking or joking. Film it. It’s obviously bull.

You put it into drive, and drive engages. There’s no clutch or synchromesh, so..?

It is fairly clear from previous posts that the OP has little mechanical knowledge (many who drive cars do not or have no desire to learn) and I suspect that English may not be his first language judging by some of his grammar and syntax (this is NOT a criticism just an observation) so perhaps you could either reply in a more helpful and less aggressive manner or just ignore his posts as they clearly seem to agitate you?

Just did that and almost no grinding sound
there you go then , its simply brake judder caused by a high revving engine from cold, once engine is hot it probably wont do it then either due to the revs dying down , its what we call transmission creep , even less if you leave it in 2nd gear .

This is true thank you, iam enthusiastic to learn after years of just driving a manual car. I used to be a Therapist and specialised in Hypnotherapy now retired. I had no time to get into cars, but now that Iam retired I find a real interest in mercedes cars. I had a 300SEL 3.5 many years ago but I sold it, to start of my business. Somehow I got back to Mercedes. But yes I have to learn a lot.

I will leave it in 2end gear then. Phew I thought it was the transmission. Thank you
