transmission question

That's what I thought!

Anyway a video demoing the problem would be ace. :thumb:
I realize what the problem was now. I should take my foot of the brake as soon as D is selected and drive on.
What I did, was putting it into D and keeping the foot on the brake then releasing it when road was clear to go. Like when moving out of my parking spot on the road side.
Someone suggested to release the brake the moment D was selected and then if needed put the brake on again.
I have done this today and not a single sound, so that was good advice.

You don't need to do anything "the moment" anything... You should be able to put it in D and keep your foot on the brake all day long.

This is what's bugging me. You're describing problems nobody else has, and so I'm trying to find out if it's you or the car.

Just because you've found a technique that avoids causing the noise, doesn't mean you're out of the woods. You've clearly got an issue, I think a video would help.

Ok I try and record the noise.

It sounds like something wrong with your brakes to me. Where are you based? Maybe ask an indie garage to take a quick look, they probably won’t even charge

and low and behold, now I put into drive holding the brake and no noise at all. I drove all afternoon in town, parked up a few times and put into D or reverse with no grinding sound at all. It seems that the problem has disappeared. Thank you all so much for all your help and advice, fantastic, iam learning a lot.

Thanks for replying with the solution- a lot of people post questions but even after lots of advice on here never post the final resolution of their problem.

I think that this should be proper etiquette after so many members take the time to reply.

I have had two c class diesels, previously a 07 204 220, .and now a 2017 c250 cabriolet. Both makes a weird grinding sound in the mornings on cold, and I have figured it out pretty much what it is.

It's a combination of moisture/dew on the discs and pads together with higher rpm/torque on first start causes a little slippage unless the brakes are hard on. Disappears pretty quickly with a couple of applications.

Joys of automatic, damn I miss my manual (not)
