Trim around gear stick with HRW switches removal?

How is the walnut trim removed around the gear lever on a W210 E class my boot switch and mirror switch are faulty?

a sharp tug from the front by the ashtray should free it.
then it just pulls back.

Use a flat kitchen knife wrapped in a handkerchief to prise up the gear shifter surround first .
