Tuning Box + Rolling Road

Hi se97mlm

So what are the dangers with this chip specific to the 300TD, melted pistons and valves or injector pump seizure or both? I am def not on the defensive here just curious and weighing up the pros and cons before possibly making the purchase myself.

Thanks,

This may be true for cdi engines but the 300TD which we are chatting about has an engine driven in line pump and 6 (non electrical operated) injectors.

Also vixpy1 is there an adjusting screw on the kit for more or less fueling?

yes, I set mine up on the dyno... to try and get the perfect compromise.

Given the line pressure is not altered I should think the pump and injectors will be fine.

The melting pistons and valves issues will really be dependant on how much time you spend with your foot to the floor. It's an issue at full load.

Simon - what's driveability like with the tuning box fitted? I only ask because I had a 'similar' unit on my E320CDI and it made it extremely 'touchy' to drive in traffic - lots of power, but you needed a feather touch on the throttle in order to avoid serious whiplash. :)

This is another calibration issue. Cars with an electronic throttle pedal have the pedal response precisely calibrated for best driver "feel".

When a well known manufactuer introduced a certain popular Diesel hatch, they had a customer clinic with about 50 different vehicles all with different pedal springs and responses to pedal signal. This way they could find the combination that felt most "sporty" to drive. In fact, most common rail engines have different throttle pedal response curves depending which gear you are in.

Sorry for all the questions vixpy1 in the abscence of a dyno how is best to get the optimum? and did you go for nost torque or bhp?

I'm not sure really, I think you're supposed to rag it up a road under load, and when it stops getting faster and more smoky.. turn it back a bit and its set up.

I did'nt set mine for maxium, I got 3 or 4 more hp on one of the runs, but it really was belching out black smoke.

Thanks for all the info so far, keep us all posted on economy once you are over the testing/ thrashing down lanes stage :D .

Cheers,

has anyone had a look inside their tuning box? could possibly be paying £260 for a variable resistor and a couple of other discrete passive components, maybe a voltage regulator or similar. If anyone wants to have a look in their box, I have access to PCB prototyping equipment......

AFAIK some of the more complex boxes do have load/rpm maps inside to either increase fuel pressure or injector opening time.

The cheaper boxes can be simply a fuel temperature 'fool' i.e. a resistor to make the ECU think the fuel is a different temperature so simply adding more without any variance for load/rpm.

How is the 300TD going now with the chip any report on economy etc.

Thanks,

Economy is no worse, but you do tend to drive it harder.

Still very please with the results. :)

Do they do a tuning box for non deisel engines, sounds interesting for my car too.

Unlikely. The TDI tuning boxes are popular because the stats for the turbo can be changed to great effect.

If you don't have a turbo then they're not really appropriate.

Reply from tandem.......

Sorry Andy,

We only supply Tuning Units for Diesel Cars
