My local place uses tyre shine when they wash my car. However, when I had tyres changed recently the guy there reckons it's not good for tyres and "thins the walls"

Fact or fiction?

Well these things must melt the surface otherwise you would not get that effect,, and it sure makes your trouses dirty if you happen to brush by one

I think this is highly unlikely, tyre shine is just a surface coating with highly reflectivity. If it were the case then all the surface writing & moulding would disappear over time(sorry for repeating above).

Reminds me of my wife going to Kwik-Fit some years ago with an ageing Chevette, on the free 'health check' it was reported that the suspension was 'misty' - still brings a smile to my face even now :) .

Huh, then the writing on the side wall would vanish?
That sounds like tyre technician speak!

You have a good point there,, I have just been down and looked at my old wheel that had plenty of this stuff on them and the tiny writing was as sharp as my new ones

Its probably no good for his eyes :D

what rubbish!! it does no harm to rubber, its basically the same as spreading lard all over them..... but if it gets on a polished rim it does mark them...

Bet the tyres on your cars smell nice Jay ..... ;)

Probably worried about getting his hands/gloves dirty when changing the tyres...

I always put black on to my tyres after a wash/valet - My G/F accidentally brushed her slipper style shoes that were in light pink against the wheel and went absolutely balistic! :D

One of my neighbours saw me hosing my tyres down with tyre shine and asked what I was doing, I explained.

He said that when he was in South Africa a few years ago people used to use shoe polish to get the same effect, and it lasts a LOT longer apparently! ;)

Interessting as cleaning shoes is almost something from the past. Kiwi thats one.

She wouldn't have lasted long with me!

Any woman who wears "slipper style shoes in light pink" need not apply.

Swissol "pneu" is fantastic stuff , does shine and isnt slippery but makes the tyres look brand new
