My 2003 Fiat was more comfortable than my C200 W204, The cloth seats are awful. Are the leather alternatives any better?

I very much doubt changing the seat covering will alter the comfort. I know my Sports seats were much more comfortable than the standard/elegance offering in the 203.

What type of seat does your 204 have?

Have you had it long?

When I first got the E300 Hybrid with leather seats it felt uncomfortably hard and it took me quite a while to get used to the harder seating.

Now though I love the E Class comfort, my new car E350 has sports seats but they feel really comfortable and I am looking forward to my French trip in 4 weeks.

This is subjective of course. I am perfectly comfortable in my w204 cloth seats. Maybe try a lumbar booster or something.

My wife has a Estate car & its more comfortable than my E55 & C32, in this case its down to the Fiat "floaty" suspension not the seats.

Any particular estate car...or just a generic estate car. I suspect if she had an E55 or C32 estate car...it would have the same seats as your saloons.

On a general note... genuine leather seats are not very common on the C-Class. Most will have either cloth or Vinyl (aka MB-Tex, Artico, or 'Man-made leather').

Sounds obvious maybe, but what do you mean by more "comfortable"? Do you mean "softer", more thigh/lumber support?

Mercedes seats are much firmer (than other manufacturers) by design. Studies (from fighter jets) have shown that a firmer seat gives better support and makes it less tiring for the pilot/driver. Mercedes strongly believe in this and it has become a part of their design philosophy for many years and I believe it has become apart of the Mercedes DNA

I've complained about E Class seats on here, but recently spent some time setting mine up correctly, following a Recaro web page and video.

If I was more cleverer I'd upload it from this phone, but...

Have a Google for Recaro - it helped me.

My facelift S204 C220 CDi Sport was a great all rounder but the seats were not good, possibly the most uncomfortable Mercedes seats I've ever sat in, it did actually go through my mind to see if I could somehow fit S212 seats in the front but ended up selling the car before I got any further.

I ended up putting a cushion on the drivers seat, the type you buy for dining room chairs.

I think it's a personal issue. Personal taste: cloth/leather, hard/soft, sporty/standard. And of course personal dimensions (no, not that); bum width and weight.

I find my facelift W204 C350 Sport very comfortable with its leather seats. But they're not the standard sports seats, they're the flatter Elegance style (because they're ventilated, not an option with sports seats). Some people would undoubtedly feel that my seats aren't supportive enough for their tastes, but I have no issue with them. They provided more than enough support when I drove over the Stelvio Pass on a lovely quiet day only an hour or so after it had opened after winter. With Dynamic Handling switched on for tighter suspension and more responsive throttle I was able to use much of the 306 horses to shoot up the mountain whilst speedily negotiating the multitude of hairpins. No sliding about on the leather seats to spoil our enjoyment. Seven or eight hours driving a day is also totally comfortable, feeling as good at the end of the day as at the start. But someone else may have struggled. It's all personal.

I find my w211 sport leather seats really comfortable. My old w202 sport cloth seats were also very comfortable but the w211 are far better. If we go on a run in our 2.4 vtec accord executive with leather etc I get back ache within an hour and know you've done the journey. The e class however I feel fresh as a daisy.

I find the cloth seats in my W204 firm but very comfortable and they had a hard act to follow as my W201 seats remained comfortable for 25 years and must have been the best of their era. MB has a track record for excellent seats.

I spent quite some time adjusting the seats in the W204 and once I got them right haven't touched them again. Not having the memory versions I hate it if the seats are adjusted when the car is serviced or MOT'd.

I reckon the key is in the post that mentions setting up. My Artico "man made leather" seats are very comfortable indeed after quite a bit of farting about getting them right.

All personal taste of course and I agree they are on the firm side, but I like that.

I got lower back pain in the demonstrator of my car and just dismissed it as I've never had a problem in any other car. Sure enough the one I bought was exactly the same. I keep a towel folded into a bulky square at the base of my back.

Annoying as I find the seats in my daughter's cheapo SEAT Ibiza very comfortable.

I drove a 58 plate CLS320 recently.

The seats were quite uncomfortable compared to mine.

Whats the plan to sort them then ?
