Update for Cars with UMI

Hi Guys,
Sorry for resurrecting an old thread. I recently bought a second user UMI kit from Ebay which I had fitted at a local independent. They have done a great job and coded it to the dash for me.
The seller said it had only been in their car for a week, but this appears to be one of the early versions, as it only seems to accept 5 digit postcodes, and the roundabouts on the cluster tell me to go completely around the roundabout if turning left. Like it was set up for foreign roads. The colour screen in the centre of the dash displays the roundabouts correctly. It does have TMC which can be selected but so far reports no messages. I aren't too bothered about the TMC but would like the cluster to show the correct way around the roundabouts.
I do intend to do the full map and software update in the future, but at the moment cannot afford the £200+ for it from Mercedes or Comand online. I have however obtained the 24mb 0003BE41.umi file that I believe this thread refers to.

Is it safe to install this? I know how to perform the software upgrade by holding the 3 buttons down to access the hidden menu.

I am just hoping someone has used the update and can tell me it is safe to do so?
Thank you for your help.

Some software updates then need newer maps, so i'd be hesitant to do an update of just the firmware now.

Do not be tempted to buy a 'used' update USB stick - they are only "one shot" and once used, if you try it in a 2nd car, it then installs new firmware, but then asks for the map, so you have to go buy a nother memory stick ..

The initial units did not support 7 digit postcodes. Then they made a UK version (different part number, different map) which has 7 digit postcode that you access via the Crown symbol (and not the normal postcode menu) - they also made versions for France and some other European countries. Then they went to a single version for all of Europe again.

Hi Richard,
Thank you very much for your informative reply.

I did however get a bit impatient and ran the update earlier.

It took around 23 minutes to update but has made a huge difference to the UMI. I now have 3D maps, but I am not sure if I should have had them already with the earlier firmware? After the update I noticed if I pushed forward on the wheel it tilted the map into 3D, and I thought on my older firmware it just moved around the map?

It has now put the roundabouts the correct way on the cluster which is great.

TMC has now sprung to life and listed loads of roads with roadworks, queues etc. Previously it just said no information when selecting TMC.

I also now have the crown in the corner which lets me input 7 digit postcodes :)

The most notable difference is the speed it calculate routes and reroutes if you take a wrong turn.

It was a bit silly of me to update blindly but I did scour the net for information and looking at old posts it seems this was the update Mercedes did to people with the early UMI's

I now can't wait to save up and get the very latest update with the lane indicators and other features it introduces.

Thank you again for your help.

I'm very glad it all worked and has turned the unit into an up-to-date device for you !

The latest map only just came out, and it was well over a year since the one before that

Cheers

I've got a 2009 W204 with the UMI (fitted from new) it has the 7 digit postcode search and works ok.

The problem I have is that I just got a new phone (HTC One X) think this phone has a new Blutooth spec. (version 4.0) and it won't pair with the UMI! Has anyone else seen this problem and is there a solution?

My old phone was a HTC desire that had Bluetooth v3.0 and worked just fine, so I suppose its just a compatibility problem between the UMI and v4.0. I think the Iphone 4s has Bluetooth v4.0 so this must be a common problem???

Cheers,
Darren

The update is no longer valid. There is now a disk set produced for this.
