Hi, I've just purchased an updated disc for my 2008 W211 estate for £106 Inc vat. The problem is, I don't know where to install it. Any ideas please.
I thought it went in the cd slot but, nope it doesn't. So, where is the little terror lurking that takes this disc ?
Thanks in anticipation.

Congrats on a great car!

Have a look in the boot sides. Best to post a pic of your satnav then we can determine which one you have. This dictates the update method.

Thanks, I'll take a picture and post it. I've looked on the left hand side rear compartment and, there are just a rack of fuses. No sign of a disc reader.

Think you update this one with a SD card, not a disc. Someone more knowledgeable will be along soon

Says disc on this site .

I have NTG2.5 in my SLK, and when I had the firmware updated with the missing 09/29 update by comand.co.uk they told me that the 2018-19 maps update was the last one that MB would issue. I've seen nothing since about any later update, so wonder how satnavshop are offering a 2019-20 disc! Maybe @Alfie can answer that one!

I installed the 2018-19 update myself (bought a genuine MB "second user" DVD) and it just went into the CD slot above the screen.

It does go into the slot above the screen. But you have to have the latest firmware version to be able to update it which I believe is called 09/29. Any MB dealer should be able to update it for you or Command online if you are anywhere near them on Surrey/Hants borders

Thanks, but I went in to the Mercedes dealership to upgrade at £120 two weeks ago and, after checking the vin etc, they couldn't do it because its a disc not a sd card. So they've ordered a disc and said its a DIY job but, no explanation how to do it. I assume it goes in the cd slot above the the screen.
Thanks for liking my car by the way, she's my baby and keep her immaculate.

 . You usually put the disc in and press ok. It does it by itself.

With some units though you can't simply jump from 2008 to 2020. You'd need to install something like 2012 to 2016 first then the latest update.

I refuse to buy updates and use Google maps on my phone. It's always up-to-date and free.

As it says in the listing for that set of DVD's, you need the 09/29 firmware update before anything later than about 2009 can be installed. There is a way to check if it is already installed (can't remember how, but if/when @Alfie picks up on this thread he'll answer!), but I found that when I put DVD1 in (before 09/29 had been installed) the screen just said "unable to install" rather than attempting to install. Pretty obvious that the maps had not been updated since the car was purchased new in 2008, despite having been serviced at the supplying main dealer for about the first 5-6 years!! As soon as I'd had 09/29 installed DVD1 started and loaded up immediately. Bloody annoyed that the main dealer had not installed the FoC update while servicing the car, as it cost me quite a lot, but supplying main dealer did not respond to my email (MB North wales).

It takes about 2 hours for the full map update to install, which can flatten your battery or cause Comand to shut down mid installation - not a major problem as it will re-start from where it left off next time you start the car. However, to avoid this I start the car, then connect a battery charger either direct to the battery (S204) or to the under bonnet emergency +ve and a suspension top mount bolt (SLK), switch the engine off but leave the key in Position 2 so Comand will not shut down. From memory DVD1 takes 1 1/2-1 3/4 hours, DVD2 a further 1/2-3/4 hour.

Worth mentioning that I managed to get the FW upgrade done FOC at MB Blackpool by being very persistent! If you do a search on here, there is a thread by me about it as MB had set a precedent by issuing a service bulletin saying it should be done FOC. Wasn't easy though!

Must admit, we use waze which is super accurate and, has much more info.

NTG2.5 are upgraded by putting the disc into the drive at the top of the headunit

From Comand Online
The 2 DVDs are inserted into your Hard Disk COMAND and the system then updates the map on the hard disk.
and
It requires the COMAND system to have 09/29 firmware in it

Aha, I was looking with blurry eyesight and didn't notice the unit was slight different to my 2007 model, which has the drive unit behind the trim in the boot.

Hate to rain on anyone's parade but it's hard to see the benefit of software updates like this.

Smartphone software is more effective on all counts.

A wiser path might be to physically or bluetooth connect your phone to the amplifier and give yourself a more future proof system.

Or replace the comand screen with an Apple Carplay unit, if you must.

Old tech has its limitations.

@MikeInWimbledon The OP wants to upgrade the maps to the last version so very worthwhile - its just you have to have the correct firmware installed to do this.
