Updating the sat nav in a 2008 W211

@MikeInWimbledon The OP wants to upgrade the maps to the last version so very worthwhile - its just you have to have the correct firmware installed to do this.
Understood. My point is that it's an upgrade from a very slow obsolete system to a slow obsolete system.

Plumbing in a smartphone connection would give an immensely better satnav, and open up all kinds of more effective voice activated phone, contacts, and music options that will update itself every year as technology marches on.

You want to navigate to visit Doris? Just say "Hey Siri, navigate to Doris," and the route is immediately there, taking into account the actual traffic blockages.

I'm glad I took the (admittedly not cheap) plunge into the world of Android Auto

Yesterday I was guided from my home to garden centre in Denham, onto a pub in Denham Village then home again. All voice activated. Ridiculously easy. It's not just the maps that Google continually improves, the voice recognition is excellent . Up to this point I've never managed to get any voice activation to work consistently - this set up is a revelation in that regard.

Not cheap but very useful. Particularly in my recent French holiday - nav, music, podcasts and radio on tap.

We were talking about this last Spring when we did our usual 2000 mile return.

It’s impossible to explain how much easier it is to have unlimited voice activated SatNav, podcasts, unlimited music, and messaging all immediately to hand, compared to the old days of cassettes, map books and terse conversations between navigator and driver.

"Terse conversations....." LOL. Mine used to start the minute I pulled of the drive. My wife, for reasons I still fail to understand, always refuses to tell me the address of the place she's booked. Cue hard stop and 10 mins trying to find the address in COMAND one character at s time....

Corrected that for you

Ah, so you know about the time that someone got out of the Porsche at the Lyon A7 tailback and caught the train back to London too.....?

The number of divorces in England and Wales has dropped by a third since the arrival of the SatNav

(Other explanations are available)

What kit are you using?

Aah yes, the good old days of paper maps. It never helped that Mrs Spiky always mistakes right for left, especially when trying to translate from map to reality.
It did however help enormously when I taught her to orientate her map and wasn't nearly as confrontational as getting her to write 'R' and 'L' on the back of her hands with Magic Marker:D

Sounds like your wife is related to mine! Cora, driving alone, gets to the top of our driveway and has to think whether to turn right or left - but if you look to the right you can see the closed end of our cul-de-sac!! The number of times we've been on a Sunday jaunt and she asks "are we close to ....." when the place she's asking about is completely the other way and miles from where we are!! God help her when I'm not here to taxi her around, she'll end up in Yorkshire!!
