Updating the sat nav in a 2008 W211

Understood. My point is that it's an upgrade from a very slow obsolete system to a slow obsolete system.

Plumbing in a smartphone connection would give an immensely better satnav, and open up all kinds of more effective voice activated phone, contacts, and music options that will update itself every year as technology marches on.

You want to navigate to visit Doris? Just say "Hey Siri, navigate to Doris," and the route is immediately there, taking into account the actual traffic blockages.
Mike, that sounds really interesting but, for an old duffer like me, how on earth do you do that ?

Step 1: what kind of motor are we looking to “modernise?”

Step 2: are you an iPhone user, an Android smartphone user or….

Well after waiting 10 days for my satnav upgrade discs from our local MB dealership, on installation I get the message " discs are uunreadable contact your local dealer".
Am I doing something wrong ? Or, do I need a previous update disc as I think that this car has never been updated since new. I'm going on holiday on Friday and wondered if I can get this done before we go.

If the unit has never been updated before, then you may need a mid update disc as well (say 2012) that also had a firmware update on it (perhaps for full postcode, updated POI abilities, better traffic updates etc - even if you don;t want that)
Jumping from 2008 to 2017 plus is not always possible

But the main dealer should have known this.....

Contact Comand on Line via phone with your VIN and they should be able to advise and perhaps even help

Sounds to me like you need the 09/29 firmware update which should have been installed FOC on a main dealer service in 2009 or later (it wasn't on my SLK, which is why I had to pay comand.co.uk to install it!). Ask the dealer that supplied the new discs if they can check if it is installed already, and install it FOC if it isn't!

when in engineering mode on NTG2.5 which thing under VERSION is the firmware code. mine does not have 0929 anywhere and the closest I can see to that format is something saying 0822. is that the previous firmware code....anyone know?
Also Alfie can you update the firmware if needed or do i have to go to MB?

Alfie (AKA Mark, or Richard) at comand.co.uk (AKA Unique Car Sounds in Lightwater Surrey) can certainly install 0929 if needed, as they did it to my SLK - at a cost of £100!

Take them back for a refund . Use Waze . This is the way 👍👍

Think you update this one with a SD card, not a disc. Someone more knowledgeable will be along soon
Hi Gollom, can I pick your brains again please ? After the Mercedes dealer getting me the wrong discs and replacing with a single disc, this still comes back as unreadable. I can't see any sign of a disc player in the boot but, I do have an sd card slot on my comand system. I wonder if that is the place to update my satnav ? I'm losing my patience with the dealer apart from the lack of urgency.

I'm planning to upgrade my NTG1.0 to an Alpine Halo 11 instead. 11" screen, Android Auto, and apparently able to connect to the CAN system.

I also installed a new Kenwood DMX5020DABS in my son's car the other week, which he uses with Waze and has been really pleased with.

Does your unit play dvd's ?

@rosie5golf
As previously mentioned you have NTG2.5, this is updated via the CD slot and it's likely if it's not updating you don't have the relevant firmware. Best to check the firmware version.

Thank you, you would have thought the dealer would have known to ask that.

Yes it does, it's a multi changer unit.
Ok. It would pick up on the satnav discs then . Something is a miss.
