Hello all,

I am due to change my brake pads and am thinking of upgrading to something with better braking performance yet gentler on the original discs.

What are you recommend?

The car is W220 S320 Diesel LWB so very heavy.

Many thanks in advance,
Garrison

I have an S320 LWB as well, just fit the original MB discs and pads. You dont need to upgrade them unless you have an S55. Don't bother buying anything else (especially EBC cos there junk IMHO)....

I am thinking of upgrading them because I shall be tuning it but would like to update / upgrade the brakes and chassis first.

Would the original brake discs and pads be good for say around 250bhp?

If you are looking to upgrade pads EBC Greenstuff are good (as used in my C200K) however, for over 200bhp Redstuff ceramic pads (as used on my C55) are a great pad in terms of safety, good value, and less brake dust although (as per the above post) not to everyone taste. I personally would use no other pad especially OEM - although others will testify that they meet their needs, At the end of the day its down to your personal choice but i wouldn't get put off by 'off the cuff' remarks search the internet for evidence - that's what i did.

Define "Better braking performance"

If you want more bite then non-Mercedes pads might be the answer. But I doubt you'll make the brakes "better" overall by doing this

Whatever you gain in bite you are likely to lose in pedal feel, quietness of operation and the ability to modulate braking force

Why would you care about "being gentle on the discs"? They're there to stop you and they wear as they're doing so

Thanks for your reply bolide.

What I am after is reducing the brake fade during long-hours of performance driving, such as on a Class 1 training.

I don't actually need any more bite as I drive with BAS and ABS off on the track so I need to be able to feed / feel the brakes.

I used to have Mintex DS pads on my old Nissan Maxima QX some years ago which was good for this purpose. The observation was that the pads wore quickly (about 15k) but the discs wore very slowly (about 100k). This lead me to think that the softer pads are gentler on the disc.
