i bought a PC Card to give my laptop USB2. You plug the card in the slot and the power supply in a USB 1 socket. The computer then recognises the hard drive plugged into the USB 2 (PC Card) and autoplays and opened a box show the folders on the harddrive. BUT as soon as you try to open, move, cut the folders the laptop freezes and has to be rebooted:(

Any ideas IT people??

Cheers

what operating system are you using?? anything older than win98 second edition is not fully compliant with USB.

XP home!

Should be OK then. Did you load specific drivers for the disc drive and card before installing the hardware. If not windows xp will load the "best drivers" it has in windows when it senses the presence of new hardware. These may not be the best drivers to use. Check the manufacturers website/support for the most up to date drivers for your hard ware and try a re-install or driver update.

hmm... Which laptop & what USB drive are you trying to connect?

Its presario 2111EA laptop and it happens whenever i use the PC card to attach any USB hard drive.

You could try a Windows update to see if any newer drivers/patches exist.

Sounds like either the device is underpowered (try a different USB port for the power) or the root hub for USB 2.0 isn't fully recognised by the BIOS.

HP's troubleshooting for USB is here . Assume you didn't install any additonal drivers for the USB 2.0 hub. Might be worth trying to delete it from Device Manager while it is still connected & reboot & see if it finds it OK.

What happens if you simply connect the USB drive to the built in USB ports? Is it recognised & just reported as being able to perform faster with USB 2.0 or is it an unknown device (USB 1.0 ?)??

If it's USB 1.0 you may not get the drive running anyway as there is no guarantee of compatibility between USB 1.0 and any later devices through XP.
