Shame he doesnt realise that most members cars here will do that without maxing out. Not impressing anyone, least of all me and I used to have a Volvo (hangs head in shame). He may just want to come out of the cloak room and buy a decent car, testing the water so to speak :o

Dont think the guy was trying to impress, merely sharing with you his motor flat out. Fair enough this is a MB forum but I guess most of us have a healthy interest in cars not just MB and its not like the guy is on attacking MB.

IMO id class Volvo's on the whole as decent cars (cant speak for the V & s40's) the bodywork on what used to be my old man's 740 would put the bodywork on the E class of a similar age to shame.

Just my 2p worth! :)

Volvo 740's , late 80's early 90's about the same time as the W124 E class......

How many 740's you see knocking aound today compared to W124 E classes ?

Answer : Not many

Maybe not down your neck of the woods but I see plenty up here.

I have a 1990 740 and a 1994 E220 - both have been well looked after, yet the front arches on the E class need replaced. I not saying that applies to all E classes but you dont have to look any further than this forum to see the problems these cars have with rust around the arches. Shocking for a car which 10 years ago was 26k. In my case the Volvo is 4 years older and done 30000 miles more and the bodywork is immaculate. That type of corrosion simply does not happen on Volvos.

You expect more when you buy a M Benz. Dont get me wrong, I love my car to bits but M Benz should be leading the way in building cars of the highest quality, especially in a climate like ours which doesnt do much to inhibit the corrosion process :(

Cheers,
C

All W124 front wings rust, right where they meet the front bumper. The water must get trapped there or something.

mine don't appear to have , you can just make them out in the other thread 'colour coded wheels'.

Of course that could be because they are made of solid filler - but i hope not !

Its really annoyig as apart from that the cars in great condition, looking at getting them replaced as soon as we start to get some better weather.

My old vauxhall astra rusted in exactly the same place, in fact if you look at any car of that age you will probably find rust in the front wings next to the bumper. Why? I don't know :)

the usual cause is all sorts of gunk thrown up from the roads getting trapped in the corners where the panel is folded - think about it, salt, grit, water all in a place that never dries out - virtually guaranteed to rust from the inside.

On the W124 and w210 the inner side of the front wings are protected by some seam sealer applied to stop the plastic liner rubbing through the paint.
The problem is that the sealer stops short of the front of the wheelarch??????
