When i posted i had only read half of the stuff oopps. However i just bought a V220 CDI. It smokes like a chimney when i accelerate it's really embarrassing, i try to go really slow when i see people on the street or if they are behind me. I think it's been clocked. It's 00' with 94k on the clock but i think it spent half it's life as a taxi. The acceleration is pretty good. The smoke is black black black. You have given me a few good places to start looking. The engine is different quite a bit but i'm guessing that the parts are similar in general. I had a Nissan patrol before. They always recommended to block the EGR to prevent dirty exhaust gas re-entering the air intake. I may try to take pictures and start a new post. Trouble is it's cold now and wet and have to wait for kids to go asleep before i can try anything. Glad you got sorted and thanks for posting it ! By the way does your dash have a button with a 'W' on it ??? I have no manual for the heating etc....

It's a wee plastic, round thing that sits to the left of the fuel filter, just above and behind the plastic cover of the air filter.

I've just bought a 1.7cdi vaneo, 73k miles and it seems a bit sluggish, 80mph flat out. Loses power on hills but also smokes heavily on start up but not afterwards. I'm thinking it's the same issue you had with the gauze filter in the oil separator blocked.
Was this the end of your issues and did you actually replace the breather filter in the end or did the clean up suffice?

This is obviously an old thread, but this kind of initial sentence makes me wonder what kind of forums someone has been to for this to be the first thing you type!
