2010 viano
Hi

I have just recently bought a 2010 viano (facelift model). The previous owner has sealed up the rear double sunroof with black silicon, which has failed as its leaking slightly. All the electrics still work as the sunroof strains against the silicon seal.

I've contacted half a dozen body shops / auto glass places and none will touch it all suggesting the stealership for replacement of the whole unit.

Is there a diy fix to reseal the sunroof / panel gap. Or does anyone have a guide on how to do it or how to remove the headlining etc.

Out of interest has anyone had a price for a replacement from the stealership?

I would like to have the sunroof in working order again if possible without paying a horrendous amount of mula.

I can post a few pics once it's back from the garage, (injector seals) if that helps.

Cheers in advance

There are a few on the forum who have fitted the sun roof themselves. There was considerable postings/discussions try searching on the forum for the topics. Perhaps one of them will read your post and give you an answer. I have not done it myself but I would think it involves taking down the headlining and removing the tray and resealing it. Perhaps the seal just needs a good clean out as a bodged attempt at sealing will often contribute to the leak.

All parts inc the seal from MB parts, it also comes out the top.

Thanks for the replys.

I did the sunroof on my discovery so no doubt it'll be similar, in that it splits in two. Then seal under the tray. I will try cleaning the silicon off, then the rubbers a good clean and see how that goes before dropping the headlining out.

Out of interest zenman63 do you know how much the sunroof costs from mb.

Cheers

Arm and a leg would be my estimate, they cost 600upwards second hand .

Considering I just paid £323 for a sump I can't imagine it being astronomical.

As I said all electrics are working fine so it should be resealable as if new. Just the trouble of dropping the headlining and removing the vile silicon monstrosity put on by the previous owner.

Still hard to believe that it's failed after 4 & 1/2 years.

£1200 if i remember, the seal is avalable, if you look each side you will see small holes and thats how the glass bolts to the runners.
Don't drop the roof lining there is no point unless you are removing the hole thing.
Petrol taking great care will devolve the silicon, brush it on and it wrinkles up, WD40 also works well.

I was thinking I might have to remove it to seal between the trim / frame and roof panel, that's where my discovery was leaking. I'll remove all the old silicon first and see where the water is getting in.

Cheers for the advise!

No the seal clips in the top, it must had gone hard, just take the glass out, try getting some string across the rubber and pull it round.
I suspect its just a blocked drain, get the hose on the roof, it should run out both sides under each rear bumper corner.
I will take some pictures

Zenman63, pictures would be great! Some pictures of the seal would be great too.

Can the seal be bought from mb parts separate from the sunroof unit. The body shop I spoke to said I could only buy it as one piece.

As much info as possible would be really helpful as my diy knowledge is basic but I can't get anywhere other than the dealership to touch it.

As a side note Zenman63 do you know anything about the parktronic system?

All the parts can be bought from Mercedes no problem. As Zenman says u can lift the rear glass out by undoing the screws on the side of the glass. U will be able to get a print out of the roof & components if u ask ur local dealer nicely..

Thanks for the reply.

Viano is still in the garage (over a week). Apparently the sub frame, gearbox and fly wheel and whatever else had to come off to get the new sump on and there are 3 bolts holding it on behind the flywheel. Getting the injectors (Black Death) looked at today but the plastic engine cover has melted around the top off them, so hopefully have it back Monday.

The roof is leaking even though it has been sealed. I'll copy a picture in to see what you guys think. I'll probably have a better idea once I get tore in about it, I'd like to know what I'm doing before I start, so I'm not caught out by the rain.

What would you recommend I get parts & tools wise before I start.

OMG, it needs to come out, why anyone would do that is madness.
Roof lining out, quarter panel top trims and grab handles, all easy enough, then a simple line of bolts.
Why is the sump being changed? is it at MB?

I've seen some siliconing in my time but that's on another level. Like Zenman says why would you do that cause you haven't got a sunroof just glass panels!! As its been said you need to take it the thing to bits change the seals, get rid of all the silo & start again..

I think I'll try to remove all the silicon first from the outside and see what I'm left with. It isn't bonded closed cos the panels still move a little when you press the botton. so I'm hoping the silicon has just been smeared on the outside as a quick fix.

Does the lining just drop out once the grab handles etc are removed?

Zenman, it was leaking between the block and sump, they tried to pull it down without taking the transmission and fly wheel out but is was still leaking. So it all had to come off and new "big" sump fitted. So leak is now sorted. It's at a garage I've used for years not mb.

I would say that your best way forward is to strip everything back and start again. No mate the roof lining doesn't just drop out, its on what you can best describe as Velcro strips which will require a little force to prise apart but easy enough. Once the roof lining is down you will see the securing rings that lock the roof in place, there should be 58 bolts around the 2 clamping plates so hopefully u haven't got any missing..

Cheers bigun.

58 bolts? It's a wonder it leaked in the first place!

I'm not even sure how the roof opens, both panes together or apart.

Still unclear if I need to seal between the frame and actual car roof. What's the best way to clean the drainage channels.

The roof is electric & should open from the overhead control panel. If its a factory fit sunroof it should be well sealed. d0 you know where its leaking from exactly? It could be that the drainage pipes are blocked and its coming from the joint?? Best bet is remove the roof lining then spray the roof with a hose pipe to isolate the leak...

Cool.

It is a factory sunroof. It looks to be leaking from the off side corner closest to the boot.

Looking for as much info as possible so I'm not left with a hole where the silicon sunroof used to be.

I'll give it a go, I'll take some pics along the way. If I sort it, it might be a useful guide for others to use.

Like I have said, Petrol will help remove the silicon so brush it on from a small pot and clean it up, rip out the rubber seal that goes around the out side.
