Hi all,

I own a E270 CDI Auto, Reg 03, mileage 140000.
I am currently experiencing vibration/shake as i accelerate. The vibration starts as the speed increases from 20mph-80mph.
I have changed the front tyres no change, aslo tested the gearbox oil by mercedes to check if any water mixer (common fault of radiator water leaking into the gearbox filter) come back negative.
Has any one experienced this type of problem..............
Thank you.

5 cylinder engines are inherently out of balance so I would suspect the engine/ gearbox mountings or possibly the propshaft UJ/couplings or the crankshaft damper pulley if you've got one. If the vibrations only occur at a particular narrow band of road speed then suspect hub/ wheel /tyre balance

On the other hand you could treat it as a positive and sell the car. That sort of fault would probably be welcome to some of the female members of the forum :D

Sorry, shouldn't be facetious, one other thing that comes to mind is a bent or buckled wheel -have you had them all (front and rear) balanced?

Does the vibration increase with road speed, or increase with engine speed?

No just the front balanced.
The vibration only happens when you accelerate slowly, if you accelerate hard no vibration a smooth lift off.
The vibration happens everytime you gradual accelerate between 20mph-80mph.

When you say tested, was it done for the Glycol issue and tested in the correct manner, a visual test is no good for this fault

Thanks

I have to wonder if the rim is bent. Distortion in the shape can be balanced only at one speed, hence a balance may not help.

I would also wonder what the state of the wheel bearing is. A simple fix and the parts don't cost much. During hard acceleration the rubber bushes are compressed so if the shaking is more apparent with modest acceleration then I would imagine the replacement rubbers are not such a bad idea.

The last thing which springs to mind is that if the car stands in one spot for long periods of time the rubber develops a flat spot which is really lumpy because all 4 wheels get the same flat spot and clunk on the road at the same time.

I did a full bushing / bearing repair to my front and the result was excellent and I do get the flat spot problem once in a while.

Does the vibration change in frequency or is it constant? It does sound like bushes are a distinct possiblity as Miro suggested as the vibration appears to be engine torque related. I wonder also about engine mounts.

Anyone ever thought about the harmonic balancer? I have a 250D to do in the near future that vibrates like hell. You can see the vibration on the fan belt, its not pretty

Thanks to all i have been away.

However recently i have changed my torque convertor which has resolved that problem.

Guess what ..I drove the car 100 mile and then the car started to play up.

The current SYMPTOMS are:
1. Rattle when you accelerate only in 2nd gear.#
2. At speeds around 35-40mph you can hear a heavy rumbling noise it gets heavier as the car go fasters.

Currently having my gearbox reconditioned.

From my research on gearboxes I was shocked to find out how common the problem is . No had a recon gearbox.

We as owners and members ,can we put a petition together and get mercedes to admit that the gearboxes are faulty.

tbh I think that's a bit harsh. Your car is only four years old and yet has done 140000 miles! That's way way over normal mileage and depending how it's been driven you're bound to experience signs of wear and tear.

MB gearboxes are very good and better than many, your fault was caused by the manufacture of the radiators, Valeo I still think it would have been better to have offered an alternative rad at a good price, but thats only my view.
Re calls are very expensive and are avoided if possible

Normally I agree with you Pammy but an MB gearbox that needs replacing at 140k is only just run in, thats why we buy em;)
MB standards slipped a few years ago and the problems are now coming to light, fight MB and you may get a new gearbox out of them, my old W202 C220 did 120k with just a new rad as the old one had a hole, other than that it was perfect as you would expect with a Mercedes.
