Hi.

Did look through various threads but couldn't find anything that I could relate to, sorry, so will have to ask a quick question.

I get a high frequency vibration at around 135, below that nothing at all. As I say it's quite high frequency, almost a sort 'buzz', so to speak. And it seems to emanate through the whole car.

Any ideas? Thoughts?

Thanks in advance. :)

Hi MangoMan

I had a similar problem, I looked under the car and could not find anything and this made me angry  .

So in the end I got so fed up, and let the problem get worse.
The problem go so worse I then checked under the car and found that a bolt had dropped out of the propshaft end near the diff.

I put a new bolt in and all if fine. :)

So it would be an idea to check the tightness of all the bolts around the prop. All though they may look tight but in fact could be loose

Would that be 135 as in mph or 25 to 2pm? STOP GOING SO FAST!

Maybe hes on a track. Or maybe hes driving in Germany.

Not that he asked for your prejudice.

I used to be a speed freak living in Germany so many a fast mile has sped by. High speed vibrations are very hard to pinpoint as you are finding out. It could be lots of things. A BMW 525 which I often threw down the Munich - Garmisch autobahn at 150mph had a rattle at a similar speeds that drove me nuts for weeks. It turned out to be the hat shelf (as the Erics called them) behind the rear seat headrests. Does it stop if you go faster than 135?
I eventually found the rattle by taking a friend along who listened closely to all parts of the cockpit while driving at speed.
(ah memories - the missus goes mental when I go over 70 now)

Cheers

I personally couldn't care less what he does - so long as his front wheel doesn't fall off near me when he is doing 135 - as for attempting to do 150 in a BMW 525 is just a touch demented by virtue of the fact that book top speed is 141 , and I suspect that unless you dropped it , you couldn't get it to go that fast .

Just because it has a top speed doesn't mean you should do it - aircraft have what is called VNE - a maximum speed never to be exceeded except in the most dire emergencies - but it would be pretty damned silly to try and see if you can get to VNE - you don't know what may drop off .

I have caned a big bike on a very empty straight bit of track , and 150 is much to fast for anyone who wants to live long .

Like it, but no, unfortunately not..... lol...lol...lol.

Adrian, I can't answer that, I tapped-off when I felt the 'Buzz'. I've got a feeling it's the propshaft. I've felt that sort of vibration before on other cars but not at that speed though. Although it could also be the rear tyres slightly off-balance, they are Czech Contis', not French ones, like on the front.

Thanks for the inputs. :D

Ciao.

Come flying with me , we can see who backs off first ....

It could also be that the car is saying "don't push me any more because something is just about to let go , come up through the floor and rip your arms and your legs off , then batter you over the head with the sticky ends "

Let us see , you are driving on third world tyres (don't push the point ) and you wonder what "that funny noise " could be ? well it could be a braincell rattling about , or it could be that the tyres are not really up to the job .

I had a similar feeling on my last 202 at anything above 50/60mph, and the garage found out it was merely a bolt was loose/missing, problem solved! Hopefully, yours is as simple.

Just for the record the BMW was restricted at 250KMH if that converts to 141MPH then so be it, the sod wouldn't go any faster, I did try.
Then again my ex boss and I, after visiting a knocking shop in Frankfurt drove back to Stuttgart at 4 in the morning wearing a 911 Carrera, he was too wasted to drive, so I did. We emptied a tank, that's about 80litres in 200 km (feel free to correct me here if I'm wrong I don't know the tank spec off the top of my head.) Anyway I don't remember much but I do know it reached 270 kmh, what a rush that one was. Now I'm 20 years older no longer "demented" (I think) but as glad as hell I did it.

Cheers for now
Adrian

PS why would an old Pistols album cover not be deemed suitable as an Avatar - they used to sell it in Woolies,
PPS does Mary Whitehouse drive a Merc??

If this vibration can be repeated whenever you reach that speed then I would suggest it is a warning, and perhaps something that should be checked sooner, rather than later. What sort of speeds can be simulated on rolling roads? I ask this out of ignorance, but perhaps it could be a safe way of trying to locate this vibration?

Could be the result of airflow over some part of the car , Audi had trouble with the A2 - as I said earlier , could be gas bypassing a valve ........

Don't know - I'm Demented - without an Avatar
