W123 - 280e 1983

Yes , just be aware of the thirsty nature of the M110 engine - 18 mpg is typical but you can use more fuel than that if you have a heavy right foot . Check for rusty brake and fuel pipes underneath at the back , bonnet hinges can tend to break and the drain channels just next to the bonnet hinges can tend to fill up with leaves etc causing rust and water ingress . Misfiring/crossfiring can be the result of burnt ignition leads : it is very tight where they run up from the distributor and between the air filter and inlet cam bank , or if not clipped neatly along their route . If the car has leather it is a result as not many had and it is more likely Tex ; a/c was a seldom specced option . They are good solid reliable cars and you can't really lose out of it . Slow operating wipers/windows/sunrooves are often down to corroded fuses and replacement can amke a world of difference ! Central locking is purely vacuum derived from the engine ( no electric pump ) and will work maybe half a dozen times after stopping then the engine needs to run for a minute or two to get it going again - this is standard .

Modern enough to use everyday / unusual enough now to get admiring glances on every trip .

If its any consolation, I bought mine for that sort of money with no mot, am doings few bits to hopefully get it mot'd later in the year. If you took a chance and it fails an mot miserably then You could consider parting it out, you'd make your money on the interior and a few other parts if it turned out to be that bad. I'm no fan of breaking up classics for the sake of it but at that money you've nothing to lose.

This thread is four years old .

The OP either did or didn't buy it in 2009 !

Sorry, new to all this....... Valid points tho!

Was very useful here too.

My 1980 280 CE idles a little rough for a 6 cylinder.

Any brand recommendations for :
  • distributor cap
  • rotor arm
  • HT leads & caps
  • spark plugs
It's about £300 for the above at my local Merc dealer.

I didn't get a price on the coil.

Cheers

You can get all those parts from Euro Car Parts, GSF, Andrew Page etc etc. Just insist on OEM parts so either Beru or Bosch.

Most of the above companies ill try and sell you leads that are supposed to be OEM but arent really and fall to bits after a year or so.
Insist on Bosch or Beru only for the leads.

The only place you will get real good quality leads is Magnecor directly.
