I've just checked under the battery of my 'new' W123 280E.

As I sort of expected, the battery tray is rotten with rust. :(

Which UK suppliers can you recommend for a replacement? How much are these just now?

(I'll phone the MB dealer tomorrow.)

Thanks

Could be A 123 620 04 18 ??? Doubt if MB still stock it except maybe via their classic centre

You can buy it from MB, had one recently, not too expensive from memory... Recently had one for the R107 SL too, and not too long ago one for the Pagoda...

Phoned local MB dealer. Not in stock, but yes, can get one sent from Germany.

"£109 plus the VAT", the man said.

I think I'll repair the old one.....

Probably the best option assuming there's enough left! BAKING SODA SOLN - [to neutralise any acid residues] and HAMMERITE is your friend.Direct to Rust Metal Paint - Hammered Finish

I had the one on my W126 thermoplastic powder coated by a friend at work after wire brushing off all the loose paint and rust. He did the rest. I was a bit worried the extra thickness of the coating might prevent the battery from seating properly, but it actually fits really snug. It's been about 11 years ago and it still looks as new when I replaced the battery recently. Plastidip looks like a good DIY alternative.

Hmm, proof that they are increasing the prices of W123 items exponentially...

A door seal used to be £30, now its £160.
