I recorded 38.8mpg over a 300 mile trip! 60% was 60mph A roads and 40% 80mph motorway cruise.

Better than my old 1.4 fiesta!

thats really good. i need to work out mine again as i am seeing a huge increase since putting new tyres on the rear.

What fuel are you running on?

Diesel. i have been running on veg (and getting 32-35mpg) but it wasn't practical for that trip.

Recently serviced too, which helps.

600 plus miles @ 39 mpg.
Mostly long trips trying to keep it between 60 and 70.
Using the cruise control where possible - I am not too sure if this increases economy.

I think the key is keeping speed down. I sold one E300 Diesel estate where the engine had been rebuilt and the new owner reported figures in the high thirties / low forties cruising between 50 and 60 mph

I find they don't drop below about 31 mpg unless you're towing a big trailer

Agreed. Mine always does 30 - 34 mpg short or long journeys (usually at 85 ish on the motorway); drop the speed on cross country A roads to 50 - 60 mph and the mpg shoots up. very boring though.
I have noticed small 1 - 2 mpg variations with different tyres - Michelins seem to be good; also noticed a 2 mpg improvement with new injectors at 180k miles.
