Hi,

I have a '93 E320 Cabriolet that has a "failed" pulley on the emissions air pump. These are parts A 104 140 08 86 (Pulley) and A 104 140 14 85 (Air Pump). My local MB dealer is saying the pulley can't be sourced and that the Air Pump is £923 with a 4 week wait from Germany. Anyone have any ideas how to source either - preferably the pulley - at a reasonable cost?

Many thanks,

Im sure there will be a way around this... Is your car in import? Ive never heard of an air pump on a UK W124...

If so maybe you could just dispense with it altogether...

No, unfortunately it is "pukker". This is something MB introduced around '93. It is recognised by MB UK as standard spec and is present in the V Belt diagram of the period. I think it was brought in for increasing emmissions control, globally.

I initally thought it was the Air Con pump and could take it out of the V Belt circuit.

Yes but can it not be missed out now? Just use a smaller belt? Im sure it will still pass MOT etc without it..

Ive just done some homework and the air pump was discontinued as of January 1994 as it caused the catalytic convertor to overheat!

Just get rid of it...

jaymanek - Thanks for your help, it appears to have worked a treat. I removed the pump, put a simple brace where the "attaching" points were for the pump and fitted a shorter belt. This far, no warnings lights on the dashboard.

Arent there any hoses you need to black off too?
One vac hose, one air line and in between cylinders 3 and 4 there is a metal pipe which needs removing and blanking off
