Hi just to update all members

I have had to put the E280 on ebay - the reason is simply that my wife absolutely hated it, and was getting to the stage that she didn't want to get into it.

So I have purchased a W210 E300 TD which she is quite happy with.

I have amassed quite a lot of information on the looms, for which I thank everyone for their help. If I can pass on any relevant information collected I will be happy to do so to any member who requests it.

Thanks to all once again

Best Regards

Richard

It must be a woman thing, my wife hates driving the 124 as well. Glad you have reached a compromise in the 210.

I'm about a week away from doing the same thing, for the same reason. Hope you have good luck with the W210.

I made the injection part of my engine harness in April after doing the head gasket and cylinder head overhaul

(it fell apart)

.
i didn't remove the old injection side from the harness as the whole thing would have fallen to pieces trying to get the tape off it, i just laid the new part along side it and connected it into the old harness about 8" from the ecu plug.

it's been been flawless till today. But leaving work today the engine cut out and would not re-start until i'd done a bit of cursing and it fired straight back up and got me home without a murmur. Now i'm thinking that it will be the the rest of the loom playing up but if anyone can suggest any other reason before i order a load of cable please sing out. this is my first foray into merc ownership and so far i'm more than happy with the rest of the car but this wiring issue would appear to be a huge issue i'm surprised aftermarket parts companies haven't started knocking these out. also does anyone know if the connection plugs that are quite mercedes specific at the ends of the looms are available from anywhere?

eta loom failure

On mine (a 320 coupe) the other catastrophe area on the loom was the section leading to the Electronic Throttle Actuator - and also the wiring actually within the ETRA casing. The most fragile section seemed to be at the 8 pin connector just forward of the ETA itself. Other poor areas were at the various sensors at bthe front of the engine block, but these are easy to see and any problems there you would likely have spotted already.

Gents, a quick technical question. My trusty 280TE has just been diagnosed with the dreaded engine bay wiring loom rot. I can get a loom from Germany for around 100 or so euros, but obviously will be made to fit a LHD vehicle. What are the implications in attempting to fit this? I have read about the issues with US ones, but they tend to have markedly different specs to the European models. My 280 doesn't have aircon.

Many thanks for any help.

lhd loom

The connector to the ecu is obviously on the 'wrong' side but actually that's no big deal because the of loom from ecu to the back end of the injection system will actually be slightly longer, so the only problem there is having to lose a loop of quite chunky loom in the restricted space available - messy but do-able. The MAF sensor connector will have to take a slightly shorter route than before (its the only hot side connector i.e. the only one with too little cable rather than too much) but that should also work. I don't know about any engine-specification-derived differences, but I would worry that a #100 loom would actually be the old spec - surely #250 would be a more likely price for a post-2000 manufacture loom?

Thanks for the reply, I have been away so not logged onto the forum for a while. The cost of a LHD loom on ebay.de varies from 250 euros to 500 euros. The cheapie I missed was an early loom although the owner said it was OK. Not worth the risk I guess and long gone now anyhow. A sparky friend has got her running again as I search for a vaguely economic solution, but am losing the will.

I have a UK E280 Estate loom ripe for a rebuild - I will dig out the part number

w124 e320 harness

so - how different are 124440 5232 / 7505 / 5632?

has anyone made a usa loom work?

i was told ny a mercedes engineer when i was atending technician training in florida that the insulation on the wiring was a formulation by Delphi to make the wiring less palatable for rodents.. we called it SOY wire as it seemed an appropiate name for edible material lol

biggest difference of all is between cruise and non-cruise versions - 8 (I think) wires to the ETA come from the main loom in no-cruise versions but from the cruise ECU in factory fitted cruise versions. modifying one to the other is just about possible but introduces many possibilities of error so is not at all desirable.

I have a spare wiring loom part No 124 540 3032 that does not suit my car available. Any takers?

Opps I missed mentioning that the part came from a supplier in UK just about a week ago and is complete. Any one wanting it could get in touch me at [email protected]
