Im really sorry if this should be in "Engine" guys, wasnt really sure where to put this one, anyway the price of fuel is crippling me now, my old 300E is doing about 10mpg around town and around 15mpg on the motorway.
I really dont want to get shut of the car as i love it to bits, i was thinking of a new engine from a donor car mayby even a diesel engine, any ideas people?

You have
1. a petrol leak from your tank or pipes
2. an injection system way out of spec leading to overfuelling
3.transmission drag/binding brakes
4. inaccurate measurement of your m p g/ faulty odometer-speedo
Check
1 by close visual inspection
2 exhaust gas analyser/ examining spark plugs/ check idle speed cold and hot
3. jacking the car up and testing for transmission binding/ see it rolls freely down a slight slope in neutral
4. checking how you calculate your MPG.
you should be getting mpg at least in the low 20s overall

I avaraged atleast 30 mpg when I last drove the CE on a run, that was the last GTG:o I need to get her sorted...;)

But If you really do end swapping the Engine does it not make more sense to sell it and get say a E200/220, they are cheap enough now...:)

Agree, those figures suggest something's wrong. Maybe a job for 124 Works?

Both my 300s (12V and 24V) average mid to high 20s mpg in normal use . Even the string of M110 engined 280s (W114 280E , W116 280SE , W123 280E , "*)CE , 280TE ) which were less economical than the 300s ALL did better than that usually averaging high teens to low 20s mpg.

I agree with above comments there must be a fault .

Only consider a worn out engine if yours has done close to the 425,000 mine has .

Sounds as if you might have the infamous dodgly fuel distributor problem which tends to show itself up by over-fuelling the engine, hence the low MPG figures.

Let the car idle and then pull each spark plug out and see if any of them are wet or smell heavily of fuel.....if a couple do, I suspect that your fuel distributor is full of crud and is affecting the metering of the fuel.

Easy to change, but not that cheap to buy....about £160+vat for a 2nd hand unit, which is better than the £700+vat that MERC would want to charge for a new one.

When I replaced mine on my 300E along with new injectors I would get @29-30mpg on a motorway run

That's cleared up an issue I had on my 230! thanks!
