Could any w124 (pref 2litres) give me their MPG that they are getting on their cars.
Have adjusted my driving style to suit the car which means that i now find myself driving far more consistenly and safer.

Cheers...

(p.s. how come i am now listening to more AM stations since i bought the car!:) )

When the Red Shed was on the road I used to get about 36mpg out of it on a long run. In town though it was down to 26 ish.

I endorse what Ian has just said in the post above.

When I took my E220 saloon on a run it returned about 37-38 miles per gallon. When I ran the car in when new, I went from London to Plymouth at a steady 60 miles per hour and got 42 mpg but never have achieved that consumption since.

I rarely drove it in town traffic as I had an escort estate for the sainsbury/B&Q run.

hi
old 124/230e estate auto, 19/21 urban,28/motorway, 19quick french autorouts,..

200te 16-valve automatic - about 34mpg on a long run (I never go above 70mph nowadays - journey times are not significantly longer). Around town - don't know, never really looked. One thing I adopted shortly after getting the car is left-foot braking. Makes town driving much smoother, quicker, and I reckon probably more economical. A recent trip to Sweden fully loaded with a roof box gave overall 32 mpg.

I have reduced my speed to take into account the 4 gear automatic aswell. Makes for safer driving though.

Left foot braking ? I am imagining what you are doing but i dont see the economical part in it ?

. I thought the 16valves only came with the facelift models of '94 ?

I may very well be talking b*****cks here, but left-foot braking means that I'm smoother going onto the throttle, and this may possibly aid economy. Or not.
The 16v 2-litre was fitted from 1992 onwards, so some pre-facelift cars have them. My car (L-reg) was built in august '93, after the facelift was out, but still has older grill and orange corners. It's debadged, but described as a 200TE in the service book. Two other 200 estates I've seen registered in the same batch from the same dealer (Haverfordwest) are facelifted E200s.
I'll just take my anorak off......

You will feel the drive takup is smoother because you are restricting the power being applied by wasting it in the brakes as heat.

This will do three things:

wear your brakes out quicker
increase fuel consumption
overheat the gearbox fluid.

All in probably not a good idea.

Evenin' all. Newbie on the forum.
I have the 1993 pre-facelift W124 200E 16V Auto which has averaged 34 mpg over the last 12 months, mostly rural but without too many motorways up here in the sticks. Don't use it much around town (free bus pass!!)

I'm never on the brakes and throttle at the same time. It's more of a smoother, quicker foot action. Something I picked up driving artics on black ice in Scandinavia :)
My current brake pads have done 17,000 miles, plenty left. Gearbox is tip top, fuel consumption normal for a 2-litre. It works for me. It's not the rally-driving sort of left-foot braking.

Thanks mate. Always nice to get input from newbies.

i have to say on a full tank with mainly town driving and some motorway i get 260 miles. dunno if thats reasonable or bad but everytime i come across a clear road i cant help but get heavy footed.

not a very good pic,, what it states is,,

simulated urban driving,,,, 25.2 mpg

constant speed driving 56 mph,,,, 40.4 mpg

constant speed driving 75 mph,,,,, 32.8 mpg

this leaflet was in with all the documents i recieved with the car,,

dont know what mine does to the gallon,, and i dont care,, just love driving it,, :bannana:
