The illumination for the gear selector on my 94 E220 estate is dead, needs a new bulb no doubt. Does anyone know which bits need to be removed in which order so that I can replace the bulb? I need to do some on the heater controls also but have found this thread for those instructions :D

Pull back the carpet at the rear end of the gear surround to reveal a screw. There is a single screw there, undo. Prise off the plastic gear shift surround and pull back and up the whole piece of wood trim. You'll then note a bulb in holder. Remove by pulling the wire its connected to. Replace bulb, push back into holder, push gear surround piece back into position, push trim piece back, put screw back in and push carpet over the top.

Once you've found that screw it's self-evident from that point on.

The bulb for the gearstick can be changed by just renoving the plastic surround. It is fiddley but the bulb is at the edge nearest the front on the passenger side.

Thanks chaps, much appreciated, just waiting on some 0.4W bulbs to arrive now.

mine was dark but after a little investigation at the bulb end it had come out of its holder. no new bulb was needed - worth a try
