W124/M104 engine issues

Sounds like as sticky throttle body plate- which might be dirty or more than likely the internal wiring is gone as suggested. your symptoms suggest increased fuelling without a corresponding increase in air flow=faulty throttle plate position signal to ECU
I'd be more inclined to eliminate in entirety any possible fuelling malfunctioning before throwing money at a new loom.
The symptoms are suggestive of fuelling issues. Either momentarily weak or as per above, rich. Reading the plugs would go a long way to pinning down a problem there.
If Grober's suggestion is correct, it implies a pretty robust ignition system - capable of firing what will be pretty wet plugs.

I think you're right Bellow. When I get a moment I will fish out the throttle body and have a look. I've a can of throttle cleaner somewhere. Maybe send it off to Sileck for a rewire...
Haven't heard back from Merc yet re the loom price. I'll call em up tomorrow. I'll set about it on the weekend. I have concluded that she's worth it - it always feels worth it when I get back in the car after fixing something or spending yet more money on something. It always brings a smile to my face even after over 10 years of driving the same motor. I will update the thread as I go. Hopefully it will have a happy ending and I'll get to 400,000 miles.

Also thinking about it - if your loom has survived a HG replacement then maybe it is not in such bad shape.

So, from Mercedes Brighton the A124 440 3433 loom is £691+VAT before discount. £649 + VAT after 6% discount which is the maximum that the system would allow...They can get it next day.

Found these guys in Bulgaria instalaciqmb.alle.bg who rebuild looms for less than £300. You need to translate the webpage and convert the Bulgarian currency to pounds. That seem to get work from all over Europe including UK.

Haven't had time to get the throttle body out yet but that will be my next move. I will send it off to Sileck for clean and rewire and see if that clears the problem. The loom will need to be done at some point and I will eventually send it off to Sileck.

Thanks for all the advice.

Hi All
A quick follow up to my earlier problem and how it was resolved...and some pictures of a recent job I did on the car.

So in short, I changed the fuel filter and the plugs and the fault has gone away. The motor is now running super smooth with none of the hesitation that I described earlier. I will attach a picture of one of the plugs.

On another note I swapped out all the front suspension a couple of weeks ago. Springs, control arms, hubs, knuckles, bearings and anti roll bar bushings. Two and a half days and all pretty smooth except having to use a recirculating saw on one of the lca bolts that was seized and would not respond to repeated sessions with a heavy sledge hammer...See pictures below. Car feels very nice up front but is riding a bit high still. Lca bolts were tightened with front loaded but I wonder if I might need to loosen and tighten them again to let the front sink bit...But it might be that the back is too low making the front look too high? These cars were much higher when new than they become on old components so maybe that is stock height? Not too worried though because it feels great to drive!
