W124 on classic car insurance?

I'd assumed that the W124, like the W201, was insurable on classic car insurance. But when I typed in the details, the quote was £270pa for a '93 280E - seemed a lot because I currently pay £90pa for a 190 2.3-16V. The difference was a nasty surprise. :(

Any other W124 owners got their cars on classic policies? What sort of premium ranges are there?

That`s a normal price.

My W124 300CE-24V is with Lancaster Insurance, and for 5000 miles, garaged overnight, just me to drive, its £214.80 - which also includes beakdown cover at £25, so without this it would be under £200.

Is yours over 15 years old? id not this might explain as some classic car policies only assume >15 years old to give the discount.??

Hi Barry,

Doesn't sound typical of a classic insurance price - perhaps they need to adjust a few details or whatever.

For reference, I pay between £100-150 fully comp (classic) for my 2.5-16 with an agreed valuation, and less than £300 fully comp (regular policy) for my '91 300TE.

It seems as though you've been quoted for a regular policy perhaps, or maybe some other factor is pushing the price up (age of car, for example?)

Ive got all mine with footman james... you get a healthy discount if you are a Mercedes club member too.

I have all mine with RH Specialist Car Division. I may be wrong, but I think you have to have a normal policy on one car to qualify for a classic policy on others. The price you quote seems to be in the normal-policy ball-park; £100-£150 per car seems right for classics on limited mileage.

It's worth checking exactly what's covered. Promotional quotes are often short of breakdown cover and other desirable options, which make a fair difference to the price.

I *think* Barry has a new(ish) car as well which I assume would be on a regular policy?

Although I agree, the price quoted for the W124 doesn't sound like the amount I would expect it to be if it were a classic policy.

My brother in law pays £176 fully comp limited to 5000 miles for a W124 estate, would drop to £131 on a 3000 miles limited policy. This is with Portwood & Co

Footman James a lot cheaper than Adrian Flux in my experience. They also have a shared policy for classic cars which is very handy.

Well obviously prices differ for different people/ages/locations/cars/driving history etc.

What's cheap for one person may be expensive for another - no set in stone rules really.

I've always found Lancaster Insurance competitive.

Always worth ringing around for a few quotes :)

Thanks all. As Will says, I have another daily driver on a regular policy. This would be a typical classic policy such as Allianz (quoted through Lancaster's Web site). Don't think I pressed any 'wrong' options when getting the quote - it was so high I just assumed a '93 W124 didn't qualify... (puzzled...)

Will try Portman and Co and give Footman James a call, too.

It's Portwood and they can be found here
Classic car insurance

Also try Carole Nash - they do Classic policies and I have found them competitive in the past . I had both my 124 estates on 'regular' policies as they were my everyday cars - paying something like £220/£230 with business use included .

I was paying a little over £100 for the 190E as a second car with 5000 miles through Carole Nash and , surprisingly , no more when I changed to the 190E 2.6 !

Peter Best - Cheap and very useful, and they dont use your no claims discount etc

Mine's with Heritage insurance.
£368 with lots of declared mods (including the turbos).
