W126 Proud new owner, found and oil leak..

Just remember not to use the cheaper green coolant in these engines, you need the proper MB stuff or at least the RED coolant that they sell in Halfords.

Jack

What's so special about the MB coolant or the RED coolant ?
Are they basic glycol-based products with corosion inhibitors that you dilute 50%-50% for use in the system.

I've always used the green stuff that you can buy in bulk from Euro Car Parts.
I used it in our W126 and in both the W210s.
At 50% dilution it acts as a good anti-freeze and summer coolant with corrosion inhibitors for any engine.
I've never had a bit of trouble with it.

But ... I'm always happy to be educated.

When I recently bought my W126, I changed the thermostat housing for the improved aluminum one, as it had the old style plastic casing which looked brittle. I then did a coolant flush and replaced with 50/50 Comma brand 2yr coolant (Green). Within a few weeks I also replaced the top hose from the new thermostat housing and to my surprise could see corrosion forming inside the housing. I then did a good search on the net and found that the green coolant is unsuitable for engines that are part aluminum, such as m103 and can cause headgasket and other woes. Basically, the MB coolant and the Red coolant are a different spec and work better at inhibiting corrosion in aluminum engines.

I've only got this information from searching the net and my personal experience with the green stuff on my thermostat housing, so, make of it what you will. The red stuff isn't much more expensive and you can leave it in for 5 yrs rather than 2, so seems worth it anyway.

now that makes sence about the difrent types as i did clean out my tank agers ago an re filled it again i will look in to this a bit more but makes sence does anybody know as well were i wopud get a new pipe that runs from the top of the radiator to the tank its not very thick but the clip seems to of worn and a little bit of water seems to of been seeping out caurseing little amounts of water to be lost over time

I've seen this leak before on Mercs, are you sure it is not coming from the plastic elbow that comes out of the top of the Rad and goes into said slim pipe to the coolant header tank? In my experience it is always the elbow joint that leaks and not the pipe, it joins to, as they are next to each other it's sometimes hard to tell.

If it is the plastic joint, then im not sure if you can buy that bit on it's own, as it's part of the Rad. Prob have to use some Plumbers sealing putty type stuff.

If it is the pipe, then eurocarparts will possibly stock it, or you could try Welcome To All German Parts

Cheers
Jack

thanks classic im about to go out now but will check it before i leve and msg late/tomoz but im sure its the pip ending its self as some times have to push it back down again i guess its because its under preaser thats all

ive looked at the top of the rad and its were it clips its self to the nipple like part of the rad i guess its just a case of ether sealing it or a new pipe ?

Take the pipe off and check for splits. If the pipe is ok, then you should just be able to tighten up the hose clip a bit. If there isn't much fluid loss then maybe the clip just needs tightening? Hard to say without seeing where it is leaking from really.
